We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laura Gorman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laura below.
Laura, appreciate you joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
I’m so grateful to my parents for so many reasons. I think the most powerful things that they instilled was of course work ethic, but along with that they always emphasized the importance of knowing the value that comes from embracing grit and grace. They were also always very real with me. That failures are a part of everyone’s journey. That success and respect are earned, not given. And there will always be someone that has a quality you may not have, but that’s irrelevant. From an early age, I was truly taught that no one is me, and that’s my superpower and gift. It had been invaluable beyond what I can express.
Laura, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I own a bridal hair and makeup company here in Texas, and opened my business 8 years ago. I have been a professional makeup artist for 17 years. Makeup and all things beauty have always been one of my very first loves. I began my career at a department store behind a makeup counter. From the very beginning, it just felt right. I knew I had found my passion. I was also very fortunate that I had amazing mentors along the way that believed in me. I can truly say that I adore what I do. To me, it’s never been or felt like work. There’s no better feeling than being a part of someone’s most special day, making them feel beautiful, and watching their confidence shine through.
While bridal beauty services are a significant potion of my business, we also offer beauty services for any and all occasions, as well as classes and education.
When I reflect on my business, I’m proud of many things, but the things that always stand out to me are my team of artists, some
of whom have been with me for almost a decade. It’s been one of the greatest honors of my life to share my journey with them and watch them grow. I’m also very proud that we are primarily a referral based business. I’m beyond thankful for the relationships we build with our clients, who honestly feel like friends & family. It’s truly beautiful, and such a blessing.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
My advice has always been to post with genuine intention. Not for likes or followers, but do it from a place of wanting to share. And be authentically yourself. Your people and your clientele will absolutely find you.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think my transparency and my resilience as a person, but also, growing up, kindness and being humble were instilled in me, as far back as I can remember. I also come from a family of people that truly love to serve, and make others happy. It’s truly everything. I don’t think there are enough words for how thankful I am for my entire family.
