We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Laura Fotovich. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Laura below.
Laura, appreciate you joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I started taking piano lessons when I was in second grade. I discovered that I had a real passion for music and started auditioning for local musicals. In middle school I taught myself to play the ukulele, and in high school I started taking guitar lessons. I performed any chance I could and started busking at Kansas City’s First Fridays. I continued my musical training at The City College of New York and got my bachelor’s degree in music. I could’ve sped up my learning process by practicing more. Most musicians will say that they could always practice more and that truly is the case. The most essential skill to progressing as a musician is perseverance. Learning to play any instrument is very hard at first, but as long as you can keep pushing yourself to practice, you’ll get better. The biggest obstacles that have stood in the way of learning more are my perfectionism and self-doubt. It’s hard to finish original songs sometimes because you don’t want to show them off until they’re absolutely perfect. Working to overcome that obstacle has been an ongoing process, but it gets easier the more I force myself to be okay with imperfections.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a musician based in Kansas City and I perform both as a soloist and with my band Cutting in Line. I accompany myself on guitar, keyboard and ukulele. I’ve been performing for 19 years and have played all over the Kansas City area. I strive to put on entertaining performances, and my ability to play several instruments sets me apart from others. I’m also able to learn new songs quickly, which allows me to take requests during live shows. I’m most proud of the original songs I’ve written and the time I performed the national anthem at a Kansas City Royals game. I pour my heart and soul into my music and truly love performing.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is getting to perform all the time. I turned my passion into my career, and I am very grateful to be able to share my music with others. I also love being able to express my feelings through my original songs.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Practicing consistently and planning thoroughly before every performance has helped me build my reputation in Kansas City. I always overprepare so that my performances go smoothly. I pride myself on always putting on a quality show.
