Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Laura Alzubi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Laura, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned in phases! I began by watching simple instructional videos, and tried various techniques with small batches. There is so much to understand with the cold processed soap process, it took awhile for me to figure out my own personal recipe and style. I looked up to Katie Carson from Royalty Soaps and Ellen Ruth. They helped me to elevate my craft and tighten up some design skills. I think that there was no way to speed up my learning process. The trials and errors of the craft were very necessary in order for me to provide a safe product for my customers.
Essential skills are patience, safety, and precision.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
As a Former Forensic Scientist of 16 years, I took a leap into the world of entrepreneurship! It all started when my youngest son asked if he could make soap for the homeless patrons during our pandemic. I learned that soap making was a perfect craft where science meets art!
I now create hand-poured batches of beautiful vegan soaps and develop many other amazing skin care items such as body butter, lip balm, sugar scrubs and face oils. My products are developed with intentional research, with the top priority of delivering a natural product that benefits the skin.
I believe that the quality of my ingredients and my attention to detail sets me apart from others. I care about the packaging of my products, my environmental footprint, and ensure that my products provide a special experience to my customers.
Because this business was started to give back to the community, we now select various charities throughout the year, and donate a portion of our sales each quarter.
Becoming an entrepreneur has helped me restore harmony to my family, increased my confidence as a woman, and has allowed me to meet some amazing people in our community.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I think there are so many ways that society can help promote artists, creatives and entrepreneurs in this world. It is simply amazing how just the ‘word of mouth’ is still effective, even in this highly digital age. People can use the digital methods to help build a business very easily, however, talking about it verbally with family and friends holds even a greater power.
I absolutely love it when I have a customer tell me that they shared my products with a friend or family member, neighbor, or teacher. I believe that giving artistic or handmade items as gifts help to not only share unique products but reminds the receiver that you CAN purchase from small businesses and find truly unique gifts.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is showing others by example, that you can make changes in your life, no matter what is holding you back. It took a lot of courage for me to leave my full-time position and pursue creating my own small business, I had a lot of fear. Fear of failure, fear of financial issues, fear of rejection. However, at the end of the day, you have to follow your instincts and the path that has been laid out before you. Sometimes that path is found early on in life, and sometimes, it happens later on in life. I truly believe that there are no mistakes. Every move we make is a learning opportunity, a chance to discover new qualities about ourselves, those around us and our world. If you look at these moments as a chance to learn, then the fear dissolves away.
