We were lucky to catch up with Laudy Burgos recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Laudy, thanks for joining us today. Do you have any thoughts about how to create a more inclusive workplace?
I created Burgos Psychotherapy LCSW PLLC with a desire to help individuals who are pregnant or who have delivered a baby. When I was pregnant with my second child I separated and it was a very difficult time. I was lucky to have a great support system, but even then I did not feel my best. During that time I began to wonder how other individuals navigate these vulnerable situations without support and/or resources.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
At a young age I found myself being drawn to the stories of others and wanting to help them in a meaningful way that supported them in some way. As a licensed clinical social worker, social work educator, mother, leader, mentor, author, wife, and someone who creates courageous spaces to talk about race, diversity, inclusion, and racial trauma, I have spent over 25 years making an impact in various settings. I have worked in the field of maternal mental health and children and family services and I am passionate about helping these populations heal and thrive. I am a first generation Latina who was born and raised in Harlem, NY. I am an adjunct lecturer at New York University Silver School of Social Work and Columbia School of Social Work. I also sit on the Boards of Postpartum Support International, Welcome Baby, and New York State Perinatal Association.
In 2023, I founded Burgos Psychotherapy LCSW PLLC to provide psychotherapy services to pregnant and postpartum individuals, or individuals who have experienced pregnancy loss.
I am committed to creating positive change and giving individuals the tools that they need to be happy and successful. that .
Mentorship is also something that I am deeply committed to and I enjoy mentoring youth of color who may encounter challenges that ger in the way of them thriving and succeeding.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
In the Latinx culture, being humble is often regarded as a positive attribute. This can be a great quality and one that is definitely embraced by most of our communities. However, it can also be a hindrance when marketing ourselves. This harm is witnessed when we negotiate salaries, ask for promotions, etc. To have a successful business, we have to self-promote; we have to know our worth; and be comfortable discussing our successes. I had to gain the confidence to be able to highlight my skills and talents on my site.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being responsible, consistent, available, and taking pride in your work are all qualities that earn you a good reputation in any field. Even when I cannot personally help directly I always point others in the right direction. I also go the extra mile when helping my clients so that they can build trust in me.
