We were lucky to catch up with Lakeshia Seals recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lakeshia, appreciate you joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
As a Teacher and a Minister of the Gospel, I would love my legacy to live in the quiet confidence of those who I come in contact with, in the paths they take, and in the values they carry forward. I would love for those who I come in contact with to say “Ms Seals helped shape who I am.” Every morning I greet the Scholars with a “Great Morning” and I tell them “I love you”. They go through a lot and need encouragement. I also let them know that they are Young Queens and Young Kings. Some have also started the same. I have learned to truly love unconditionally because people cannot give what has not been given to them. LOVE is a powerful weapon and KINDNESS doesn’t cost. I want people to say that Lakeshia is a prayer warrior who will pray for you

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I graduated with my Bachelor’s Degree at the age of 40 from DeVry University and I am currently working on my Master’s Degree. One of quotes I live by is by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, “If you can’t fly then run if you can’t run then walk if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward!” Life happens to us all and we need the help of our village. Divine Help Ministries provides that help through support, guidance, empowerment, and resources. As stated by Langston Hughes, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” I would say that my hardest challenge is dealing with the health challenges that come with Lupus while balancing work, being an entrepreneur, being a mother and grandmother. I know that my FAITH is the reason I am still here today. I have hope in knowing that all things work together for the good of those who love the Lord and who are called according to His purpose. I fight every day so that my children can know that when LIFE happens, we are to keep moving forward. Another favorite quote is by Booker T Washington, “Success is not measured by where you are in life, but the obstacles you’ve overcome.” I also grew up in a single-parent home. It was both of my parents who instilled in me the power of prayer, which is why my answer to life struggles is to pray about because I have learned that I can do all things through CHRIST who strengthens me.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Another favorite quote is by Booker T Washington, “Success is not measured by where you are in life, but the obstacles you’ve overcome.” I have had to unlearn the fear of mistakes. I have not always made the best decisions. I share with my Scholars “Be Great, Do Great, and Make Great Decisions.” There is no perfect person. Life has lessons for us all and we have to learn to unlearn our way of thinking sometimes because it can make life harder if we are too stubborn to change. I have had to unlearn the microwave mentality. It is important to do things in timing. We cannot react in the moment, it is important to respond. Think before you speak. It’s okay to be silence because silence shows strength.
