We were lucky to catch up with Lain Roy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lain, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Definitely! My second EP, ‘Lesser Gods’ just dropped on October 6, 2023! I’m super proud of this project and received lots of great feedback on it from industry professionals. It is by far my best project to date, and it is fully written by me. It’s a very vulnerable EP, especially the title song of the EP, ‘Lesser Gods’. It is the lyrical truth behind the push and pull between your desires and your own transgressions. I produced this song myself, and it will probably leave you with a tear in your eye because either you or someone you know is going through the same thing. Hope you all enjoy it!:)

Lain, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Besides working on my own music, I also record vocals for client projects. If a client needs vocals for a demo or commercial project, I go back and forth with them with revisions until the vocal is to their liking. I think what sets me apart from others is that I take this seriously. This is not just a passion project for me. I need to make it, because I can’t see myself doing much else.
I would say that I am most proud of the show I completed this past 2023 summer. I performed in ‘Electro’ as Electro in Arlington, TX at Six Flags from May-August. We performed over 200 shows, and I was exhausted at the end. I felt like an old man with a bad back, knees, and ankles. This was my first show I’ve ever been a part of, and I’m so thankful for the opportunity. My vocal endurance improved vastly, and my stage presence grew immensely. I’m proud of myself for jumping in on an opportunity I never thought I would be a part of.
I want my followers to see me as a real person, not just a fake internet personality with a perfect life. That is the reason why I am shared ‘Lesser Gods’ with the world on October 6, 2023. It’s all about faults and how we are all alike.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The reason I’m driving my creative journey is because of God. A year after I was on ‘The Voice’, I seriously contemplated getting a full-time job, and only working on music as a side/passion project, and I actually tried that out for a few months. I was working 80 hrs a week with very little pay, very high stress, and little to no sleep most of the week. I sat down and prayed to see if this is what God wanted me to do, to hustle, to have a full-time job, or to change gears and continue with my music. Quickly, my heart was transformed and pushed back to music. I know that God wants me to create music for a purpose. Whether I know that purpose or not yet does not matter. My mission is God.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
ABSOLUTELY DO NOT HIT UP PEOPLE FOR HELP AFTER FIRST MEETING THEM. While going to Belmont University, I met someone in publishing that said to pull the student card as much as possible and when first meeting an executive for coffee, to feel free to ask them if they can connect you to someone in “x” industry. I felt pretty strange about using this tactic the first few times. After a few tries, I met with one person, and after asking them to connect me with someone, I could feel the energy change, and that was the last I heard from them.
The music industry is truly based on 2 things: 1. connections and 2. being a cool/fun/nice person. To ask someone for connections during the first meeting was the worst advice I received, and it ended up burning some bridges with some high up people in the music world.
I had to delete this from my mind. Lesson–truly make a meaningful connection with the person without any means of extorting their connections or help. Build and foster that relationship because you want to connect with this person and to learn/grow from them. Whatever happens afterwards is just the cherry on top.
