We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lafayette Koo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lafayette, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
As a child I’ve always had an eye for music and arts. Always took creative arts in school. Music, theatre and painting. I taught myself piano at a young age while attending church. Well not exactly. I would skip service and hide in the music room. Which had a grand piano. Didn’t really agree with what the preacher was saying so I looked for other things to pass the time. I use music as a therapy a lot of the time and to escape, not so much from reality but just from the world. At least this one. Well… sometimes reality. All I am is what I’m going after. And the best way for me to release everything inside is with a 61 spread.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I stared writing and producing in my early 20s. My cousin bought me a workstation synthesizer which I was capable of writing and recording. I’m very much into theatrics and film. So my first years of performing were as a solo artist and I would incorporate theatrics into my stage performance. I didn’t have a live band at the time so I used theatrics. I thought it would seem a bit of a bland performance if it was just me with a synthesizer on stage.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to have an outlet to translate how I feel, think and am.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Approaching writing and producing with a technical mentality. I’ve learned that you shouldn’t approach Art with structural view. Just let it flow and let it own you. Don’t think so much with the left side of your brain.
