We recently connected with LaCarey Dickerson and have shared our conversation below.
LaCarey, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. So, we’d appreciate if you could open up about your growth story and the nitty, gritty details that went into scaling up.
For me, growth began at the intersection of opportunity and preparation. I started building my business through social media, but quickly encountered a series of roadblocks. Early on, it felt as though I had hit a ceiling. I wasn’t generating the level of sales, visibility, or engagement I knew was possible. Revenue declined, and it became clear that while I had built something with potential, I lacked a critical component: a deep understanding of marketing.
I recognized that if I wanted my business to grow, I needed to invest in mastering this discipline. The alternative was continuing down a path that would ultimately lead to stagnation and decline, a reality faced by nearly 50% of small businesses within their first five years. Determined not to become another statistic, I immersed myself in learning from some of the most influential marketing strategists across industries. I studied the work of Seth Godin, Gary Vaynerchuk, and Neil Patel, leaders known for their ability to adapt to evolving technologies such as AI and shifting social media landscapes, while maintaining a strong focus on building authentic, lasting relationships between brands and their audiences.
Through extensive research, hands-on experimentation, and lessons learned from both success and failure, I began to refine my approach. I applied these insights strategically, allowing me to navigate challenging periods and unlock new levels of growth, not only within my own business but for others as well. Over time, I was able to help creators, entrepreneurs, and organizations scale rapidly and sustainably by implementing proven, data-driven marketing strategies.
One particularly impactful example was my work with a nonprofit trade school. Before my involvement, the organization struggled with low enrollment and minimal classroom attendance. As their Executive Administrative Assistant shared during an interview, “Before KD came on board, our classrooms were nearly empty. We were relying on outdated marketing strategies that had been in place since we opened, and they were no longer effective.”
After implementing a comprehensive, modernized marketing strategy focused heavily on digital presence and social media visibility, the results were transformative. Enrollment increased by over 200%. Prospective students began reaching out consistently, often citing repeated exposure to the school online as the reason for their interest. What was once a relatively unknown institution with little to no social media presence quickly evolved into a leading, highly recommended trade school within its industry.
Today, all classes are operating at full capacity. The school has expanded its offerings by adding two new programs and now runs both morning and afternoon sessions to meet demand. Furthermore, due to this sustained growth over the past two years, the organization is actively exploring opportunities to open an additional campus in another city.
This journey is a testament to what is possible when strategic marketing meets persistence, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning. Growth is rarely instantaneous, but with the right foundation, it is absolutely achievable.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My marketing journey began long before the launch of KD Management & Consulting. In 2017, I started on YouTube, creating content for a small but engaged audience. My focus was simple yet intentional: break down complex ideas into clear, practical insights from the perspective of the everyday consumer. I wasn’t just creating videos, I was identifying problems, simplifying solutions, and learning how to communicate value in a way that resonated.
Early in that process, I noticed a consistent trend: a growing number of individuals and organizations were trying to enter or grow within the marketing space. Whether it was content creators attempting to build their platforms from the ground up, or businesses and educational institutions working to attract more customers, clients, or students, the demand for growth was clear, but so was the disconnect.
I took a step back to analyze that gap. What was preventing growth? Why were so many struggling to gain traction? The answer came down to two critical factors: knowledge and execution. Many had access to information, but lacked the strategic understanding of how to apply it effectively. Others failed to adapt, holding onto outdated methods instead of refining what worked and eliminating what didn’t. I quickly realized that when you combine the right knowledge with consistent, data-driven application, growth can happen at an accelerated pace.
Today, I bring that philosophy into every aspect of my work. I partner with content creators, entrepreneurs, and organizations across industries, providing a comprehensive approach to growth through multiple roles:
* Marketing Analyst & Researcher: I collect and analyze data on target audiences, competitors, and market trends to inform strategic decisions that directly impact performance and profitability.
* Content Marketer & Creator: I develop high-value content, ranging from blogs and videos to podcasts, designed to attract, engage, and retain a clearly defined audience while building brand authority.
* Digital Marketing Specialist: I focus on strengthening online presence by managing digital channels, optimizing visibility, and leveraging tools such as social media strategy and SEO to drive measurable results.
What truly sets me apart is not just my knowledge, but my proven ability to translate strategy into tangible outcomes. From scaling my own social media platforms to driving growth for businesses across diverse industries, my work is rooted in results. I don’t rely on theory alone; I test, refine, and implement strategies that consistently perform.
However, the aspect of my work that I value most goes beyond metrics. I take pride in helping individuals and organizations find their voice, especially those with the vision to make a meaningful impact but who have felt stuck or overlooked. I understand firsthand what it’s like to have ambition, to put in the time and discipline, and to still face challenges in gaining momentum.
Being able to help those businesses navigate through those critical growth phases, break through barriers, and position themselves to compete effectively in their industries is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that I’ve played a role in helping them move forward, gain visibility, and realize their potential is, without question, one of my proudest achievements.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the most important lessons I’ve had to unlearn in my career is the need to always be right.
Early on, I recognized that this mindset, while often subtle, is far more common and damaging than many are willing to admit. I’ve seen it impact individuals at every level, from emerging content creators and small business owners to seasoned executives and CEOs. In many cases, it becomes a blind spot: as success grows, so does confidence, but if left unchecked, that confidence can evolve into resistance. At a certain point, these individuals stop listening, stop adapting, and ultimately stop growing. I’ve witnessed talented people build something from nothing, only to lose it all because they never addressed this underlying issue.
I made a conscious decision early in my journey that I never wanted to fall into that pattern. I didn’t want to become someone who plateaued because I believed I had all the answers. At my core, I’m highly competitive, not in the sense of needing to be right, but in the drive to continuously improve, evolve, and perform at a higher level.
That required a mindset shift.
Instead of approaching challenges to prove I was right, I began approaching them with the intention of learning. I started to consistently evaluate my strategies, decisions, and outcomes through the lens of a student, asking better questions, seeking outside perspectives, and remaining open to being wrong if it meant getting better results.
In marketing, especially, this shift is critical. The market doesn’t respond to ego; it responds to relevance, value, and understanding. The moment I stepped back and began truly listening to audiences, to data, to trends, I realized that the market will tell you everything you need to know if you’re willing to pay attention.
Unlearning the need to be right allowed me to become more adaptable, more analytical, and ultimately more effective. It strengthened not only my decision-making but also my ability to help others grow, because I lead with curiosity, not assumptions.
That lesson continues to shape how I operate today: stay a student, stay adaptable, and let the market guide the strategy.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What has ultimately helped me build my reputation within my market comes down to one core principle: consistent, measurable results.
In marketing, perception matters, but performance defines credibility. Content creators, entrepreneurs, and organizations don’t just evaluate what you say you can do; they assess what you’ve actually achieved, and just as importantly, how efficiently you’ve achieved it. Results, paired with timeframe, are often the clearest indicators of where someone truly stands within a market.
I’ve been very intentional about ensuring that my work reflects not only growth, but repeatable growth across different industries and platforms. Anyone can scale their own brand, but what differentiates a true marketing professional is the ability to apply those same principles to other businesses and generate meaningful, transformative outcomes. That’s where reputation is really built.
In today’s digital landscape, your track record is transparent. Your social media presence, your portfolio of work, and the businesses you’ve supported all contribute to your digital footprint. When people can consistently see evidence of growth, whether it’s increased visibility, higher engagement, or significant revenue impact across multiple clients, it reinforces trust and positions you as someone who understands not just theory, but execution.
I believe reputation is earned through demonstrated impact. Over time, results speak for themselves. They remove doubt, validate strategy, and create a level of authority that no amount of self-promotion can replicate. That has been the foundation of how I’ve established and continue to grow my reputation within the market.
