We were lucky to catch up with Kylah Benson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kylah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents are the best in the world. I may be a little biased but, they literally are. They’ve done a lot of things right, and although they aren’t perfect, and there has been some things they probably could have done better, their intentions are always positive. My Mom is a serial entrepreneur, she also has a career in tech, and she wrote a book….how cool is that? My Dad is also an entrepreneur, he is passionate about kids and helping them be their best selves which is tied into his business and career, and he also coaches basketball. My brother and I, have picked up on a lot of lessons our parents put down by simply watching their lifestyle choices. My parents have positively impacted my own career by showing me how to run my own business, and ultimately displaying so many options we have to choose from when it comes to what we want to be when we grow up. My parents encourage and require us to do well in school and learn as much as we can. The difference is, they aren’t pressuring my bother and I to go to college, or to play a sport, they truly support whatever we take interest in and tell us to do our best at it. I was just under 2 years old when my Mom started my own lipgloss line. She was currently running her own beauty line, and after learning I was on the way she started to brainstorm ways she could bring me on board with her business to show me the ropes at running a business at a young age. I was only 4 years old when I started my YouTube channel. Again, another interest of mine my parents supported and allowed me to fully emerge in. What my parents did right was lead by example, and inspire us to chase our dreams and go after what we love no matter what it is. With that foundation, I truly believe I can do anything, especially with them encouraging and supporting me.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Yes of course, my name is Kylah Queen B and I am a 7-year-old entrepreneur and aspiring Youtube celebrity. I started my own lip-gloss line called “Little Splashers by Kylah B” co-owned with my mother in 2016. In 2019 I launched my very own YouTube channel “Kylah Queen B TV”! This channel is an expression of my personality, which is fun, engaging and often over the top. My current endeavors include a merchandise line I launched, with catch phrases recognizable and used by young people today.
I love school and I’m always working on mastering reading and math. I love to color, sing, dance, swim, play outside with friends, and watch my fellow YouTube friends in my spare time.
My goal is to create a platform for kids to be kids while pursuing their dreams. I believe I can do anything I put my mind to and I want all other kids to realize the same. Look out for my children’s book coming soon!
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
Yes, I now manufacture my products. I have a vendor I’ve built a great relationship with who I order my lipglosses from. The process of finding a great vendor can be a difficult one, but it’s necessary. When I first started my business, my Mom and I had a vendor who offered homemade lipgloss. It was the same vendor she used for her own beauty brand so that was a plus. Then that vendor discontinued the products we ordered, so we started making our own lipglosses. That process was challenging, because not only did we have to try our best to perfect the formula so it’s almost exactly the same as the one before, it also took a lot of time. I was too young to be effective when helping my Mom, so she made a business decision to go back to manufacturing. The process of customizing a formula was the route we initially took because we wanted to stand out amongst our competitors. I learned from my Mom that route was very expensive and also time consuming, which are two things you want to avoid as a small business owner. Currently, we manufacture our beauty products only, and my parents handle my custom print orders for my merchandise line.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I watch a lot of YouTube videos and they have truly helped me sharpen my own skills as well as shed light on other kid entrepreneurs. Learning from my peers, and watching fellow YouTubers has not only inspired me to keep going but it also helps with learning what my audience wants and dislikes. There are some successful kid YouTubers that also help with me video ideas, marketing tactics, and promotion for my lipgloss line.
