We recently connected with Kristy Hyde and have shared our conversation below.
Kristy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
My brand stands out because I prioritize educating clients on comprehensive hair care beyond their appointment. I provide personalized, one-on-one services that blend hair education seamlessly with expert styling, ensuring clients leave not only looking beautiful but also empowered with knowledge to care for their hair effectively, especially curly clients.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I entered the hair industry in 2001 due to my initial experience with hairstyling, and upon obtaining my license, I discovered a passion for brightening someone’s day through my work. After a decade in various salons, I decided to open my own in Greenville, SC, driven by a desire to instill positive changes in salon practices, especially natural hair. My focus has been on educating clients, particularly those with curly hair, on proper hair care. This dedication has reshaped my social life, as my services are tailored to teach clients how to work smarter not harder when it comes to curly hair. I take immense pride in taking that leap of faith to open my salon, as it’s allowed me to help hundreds of individuals embrace and love their natural curly hair.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I kickstarted my business by seeking $25 donations from my clients. Within just two weeks, I raised $1700, which became the foundation for launching my business.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I am constantly refining my business strategy, driven by the limitless potential for innovation. A pivotal moment occurred when I overhauled my entire hair service lineup, moving away from relaxers and protective styles to concentrate solely on natural hair during a curl campaign. The onset of COVID-19 initially caused significant anxiety. However, it unexpectedly proved advantageous as clients unable to visit salons sought out natural hair care services. Now clients are getting back to leaning more towards hair extensions and wigs than natural hair again. Which is where my exclusive spa mist service will be a benefit on getting the best detox and facial fit your hair after taking down installs.
