We were lucky to catch up with Kristina Gasenko recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kristina, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
My first client didn’t come from ads or a big launch – she came through a referral.
At the time, I was helping a woman in California on a volunteer basis. A complaint had been filed against her with the state board, and she urgently needed to prepare for her licensing exam. I had some free time, spoke English, and decided to help her navigate the process and get ready.
After she passed, she referred another woman to me. This new client had her exam in just three days.
I remember thinking, “This is intense,” but I said yes. I quickly bought the required textbook, created structured lessons and presentations, and essentially built a short, intensive training program from scratch – all in English, adapted for a Russian-speaking professional.
We worked non-stop for those three days. And she passed.
That was the first time I earned money from someone outside my personal circle. But more importantly, it was the moment I realized I had created something unique – a way to translate complex licensing systems into something accessible and achievable for immigrant beauty professionals.
That experience became the foundation of everything I built after.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a business owner and consultant specializing in licensing, compliance, and business development for beauty professionals across the United States.
I help beauty specialists – especially immigrants – obtain professional licenses, find legal employment, and open their own businesses in the U.S. without unnecessary time and financial loss, particularly when they already have education and experience from other countries.
My work covers the full process: from evaluating prior education and guiding clients through licensing pathways, to preparing them for state board exams in English, and supporting them in launching and licensing their own salons. This includes areas such as permanent makeup, esthetics, massage therapy, cosmetology. barbering and nail technology.
I also help business owners navigate health and safety regulations, pass inspections, and stay compliant with constantly changing state laws. Keeping my clients informed about new rules and regulatory updates is a critical part of what we do.
In addition to my consulting work, I founded a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting immigrant women. Through this initiative, we provide guidance, education, and resources to help them integrate into the industry, become licensed, and build sustainable careers.
What I’m most proud of is the real, measurable impact of this work – helping people rebuild their professional lives in a new country, gain independence, and create opportunities not only for themselves, but for others as well.
At the core of my brand is a simple idea: with the right guidance, clarity, and support, building a legal and successful career in a new country is absolutely possible.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the biggest pivots in my life happened when I realized I couldn’t continue on a “safe” career path, even though it looked very promising from the outside.
At the time, I was working on licensing consulting as a side project while actively preparing for corporate roles. I went through interviews with companies like Google and Apple, and eventually started working as a contractor with Apple at Apex Systems when I was living in Austin, Texas.
It seemed like I was doing everything “right” – building a stable career, working for a major company. But very quickly, within about four months, I realized something didn’t feel right. I couldn’t see myself sitting at a computer all day, doing repetitive tasks, even for a great brand.
At the same time, my work with clients in the beauty industry was growing. I was helping real people solve real problems, and I could feel the impact of what I was doing.
That’s when I made a decision that felt both exciting and scary – I walked away from the corporate path and fully committed to building my own business.
That was my point of no return.
From there, I started treating my work not as a side project, but as a real company. I invested in learning how to build and scale a business, grew a team, developed systems, and focused on long-term impact.
Looking back, that pivot defined everything. It wasn’t just a career change – it was a decision to choose purpose over comfort.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I didn’t start with any photography skills, a marketing background, or a budget for ads.
I simply started by showing up.
In the beginning, I created a public Instagram page where I shared who I was and what services I offered. I had a simple website and all my business documents set up so I could accept payments online — nothing fancy, just a solid foundation.
From there, I consistently shared what I was doing. I personally responded to every message and inquiry, and over time, I slowly started building a team as the demand grew.
What I realized early on is that it’s not about how you post — it’s about what you share.
Most of my clients came through word of mouth, not because of perfect content, but because of trust. I focus heavily on being responsible, transparent, and accurate. Everything I say — whether in consultations or on social media — is backed by official sources. I always reference state boards, laws, and regulations.
That approach built my reputation.
My advice for anyone just starting is simple: don’t be afraid to show up. You don’t have to start with video — you can write posts if that feels more natural. What matters is that people know you exist.
You can be an incredible professional, but if no one sees you, no one will find you.
Today, I have a team — editors, content support, people helping with YouTube and webinars — but it all started with overcoming that initial fear and just beginning
