We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Krista Cagg. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Krista below.
Alright, Krista thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new venture – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
The COVID Shutdown of 2020 was insane, to say the least. My employment was closed, but my unemployment, and the stimulous check were taking a while to get to me. That didn’t stop the bills, however. I had learned about a freelance site called Upwork, and decided to have a look. That place saved us. I found a lot of work as a Ghostwriter, mainly for cheesy and spicy Romance, but hey. It paid fairly well. I found a few repeat clients, and steady work for the next two years. I was literally writing for a living! Go me!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I went to comic book school: The Joe Kubert School. Graduate 1995, However, I learned that drawing comics was not in my wheelhouse. I could ink. I was really good at inking, but I ended up moving far away from NYC…and this was before the internet. I was more interested in spot illustration anyway, but couldn’t get work. For the longest time all of my art was for myself. Many years later I developed an Essential Tremor which makes my hands shake. So much for inking and painting. But I always loved writing and turned to that. Steampunk was a big thing at that time: 2010. I adored it! But I found the scene a bit…mama said if I can’t say anything nice, yadda yadda. I decided to write my own Steampunk series. It’s worth noting that I am extremely anti-Corporate America. I HATE how it treats people. So, the theme of my series is anti-corporate, time-traveling pirates. While I was recovering from neck surgery book one of The William’s Hunt was written: The Milan Job.
My other love is Horror. Specifically Lovecraftian/Cosmic Horror. While I was taking care of my mother when her cancer returned, I began writing a Penny Dreadful series based in my home town of Milton, PA: Milltown, Hunting Grounds. (For a spooky coincidence, I damaged a historical church’s roof in the book and a month after it was published, the church’s attic caught fire…damaging the roof. Ahem.)
I only have the first books in both series written…much to my publisher’s dismay. The reason is two fold: 1. I started writing another series, because you can’t have too many, and 2. I’m taking care of my father full time while he is in home hospice.
Meanwhile, I also started a book box subscription business because I’m kinda insane.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I was in art school, I began dating a young man. It sounds stupid and cliche, but people would always comment on how perfect we were/looked together…even though he was a good foot taller than me. We always had the most unique interactions. (A nun once stuck her tongue out at us jokingly when she realized my boyfriend was watching her. It was hilarious and things like that happened to us all the time.) We didn’t even know each other for a year before he asked me to marry him. Two days later, he was hit and killed by a car. It was the worst thing that could ever happen to me. I was messed up for a long time, most of the time I didn’t realize how screwed up I was. But I survived that. I survived watching cancer take my mother. I’m surviving watching my father slowly die. Nothing can knock me down for good.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Laugh if you will but my ultimate goal is to see something I wrote end up on the big screen or TV.
