Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kirsten Ritenbaugh. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Kirsten thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
With September being Desmoid Tumor awareness month I wanted to share my story about facing adversity through my diagnosis. In January of this year I noticed dissension in my abdomen as well as debilitating pain.
After it being diagnosed as an Ovarian Cyst I went in for surgery only to discover it wasn’t in fact a cyst it was actually a Desmoid Tumor the size of a watermelon connected to my mesentery artery. After multiple procedures I was able to get the tumor removed. I might not look the same on the outside but I feel completely better mentally and physically. I am eternally grateful for my medical team at St. Joseph’s.
As you can imagine this completely shut down the operations of my salon, Kirsten Jane Beauty. I couldn’t physically stand behind the chair for months. In order to survive I began to sell äz Haircare online and shipping them to my guests. I had family and friends from all over the country supporting me through this challenging time. I am so thankful for äz Haircare and what it did for me when I was away from the salon. I might not have been able to physically do their hair but in a way I was still able to care for my clients while I was away.
Fast forward to June of this year I was offered a job in Sales with äz, introducing the brand to luxury salons all over Florida. Venturing into this side of the industry has been so rewarding! Being in the field has taught me so much about myself and salon ownership. I am still doing hair and actively working in Brand Development with äz Luxury Haircare which is truly the best of both worlds!
Moral of the story is that you have to keep going. I couldn’t have given up and completely closed the doors of my salon. Instead, I overcame my obstacles and let my setback push me to a place I never thought was possible! When life gives you lemons you have the power to make whatever you choose!

Kirsten, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As a second generation stylist I have grown up in the industry. To me, doing hair isn’t a job, it’s a passion! At Kirsten Jane Beauty, the experience is everything. From the moment you walk in to the second you leave the entire service will be curated for you. I focus on doing high end, luxury hair services. I have clients who travel to see me from all over the country. That alone tells me I am doing something right.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Rodger Azadganian the founder of äz Craft Luxury Haircare shared two books with me that truly changed my outlook. The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann as well as Unreasonable Hospitality: The Remarkable Power of Giving People More Than They Expect
Book by Will Guidara.
Rodger has motivated me so much along the way. I wanted to share our brand mission statement as it truly aligns with my beliefs. .
“Our Mission is to raise our industry’s standard once again, elevating our craft and art of hairdressing to a level of excellence without compromise. We are craft hairdressers celebrating passionate hair professionals who focus on constantly striving to master their craft and refine their art. äz Haircare is engineered for the discerning individual who demands quality in everything and in every way.”

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Instagram. When I started doing hair the only way to learn something new was to attend a hair show. As technology has evolved so has our industry. “You’re the average of the five people you spend the most time with” wise words attributed to motivational speaker Jim Rohn. I believe the same goes for who you follow on Instagram. As beauty professionals it’s crucial to surround yourself both online and in person with those who motivate you to be a better version of yourself! It’s called a following for a reason.
