We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kinston Smith a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kinston , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew in the 3rd grade when I played Mowgli in “The Jungle Book Jr”. During that show I realized that this was something I couldn’t walk away from. When it came to being a Music Artist, I didn’t really take it seriously until late 2023. While listening to some of the artists that inspire me, Chris Brown, Tone Stith and Michael Jackson, I started to hear things I wanted to create. It was difficult to see myself as an artist at first but then I got my own small home studio, and started watching tutorials on the basics of how to EQ, mix, etc. I’m learning so much and growing as an artist each time I create.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an Actor, Singer, Songwriter, Producer, Musician and Dancer. I currently have music on all streaming platforms under the name Kinny. I have been a performer since the age of 5, it is a passion of mine. I have performed in over 19 theatrical productions, commercials and short films. The music I create and the characters I bring to life on stage and screen are powerful forms of self expression for me. I feel that what sets me apart is my skill across art forms. As an Actor, I have the ability to command the stage or screen no matter what character type I am playing.
As a dancer, I use my formal training to control my body in ways that allow me to flow with movement as I create. As an Artist, I am able to hear distinctive, intricate harmonies and create lyrical combinations that uniquely express the complicated emotions I am feeling. I’m most proud of the growth I have achieved in all of those art forms. I realize that for 16, I have achieved some great things and been able to walk through some pretty impactful doors. I am both proud of and humbled by that. I know I will continue to work on my art throughout my life. I want people to see my brand as a unique blend of talent, skill, creativity, authenticity and evolution.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My biggest goal is to fulfill the destiny on my life. To create and build all the things that I am uniquely charged with bringing into the earth. I want to leave a legacy of greatness in the art forms I am passionate about pursuing. I want to one day open doors for, and be mentor to other young artists going after their dreams like I am.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I feel like for me, the most rewarding aspects are seeing my dreams fulfilled and being acknowledged for the work that I’ve created. Knowing that my work as an artist in all art forms is being enjoyed and appreciated is extremely rewarding.
