We were lucky to catch up with Kinda Turner recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kinda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
The biggest trend that I am seeing in the industry is history repeating itself. From 1970 wallpaper prints on denim to street styles from the 1990s (mid-drift sweaters, oversized jackets, Dr. Marten boots), they all have a 20th century twist. It’s good to see some things coming back but others not so much!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Kinda Turner and I am the founder of K. Makini Image Consulting. I’ve always had a passion for looking good and helping others do the same. When I realized that image consulting was an actual profession, I had to figure out how I could make it a reality.
So I decided to do my research, roll up my sleeves and dive into the fashion scene in DFW. I found that if I could gain the necessary experience, more people would be drawn to my unique style and how I could transform a basic outfit to an absolutely fabulous ensemble!
By working back of the house and directing local fashion shows, I gained the much needed experience and networked like crazy! There’s nothing like learning from the school of hard knocks and learning from some of the best creatives in the industry. I worked in all facets of fashion in Dallas from sourcing local designers, styling models and marketing brands. I quickly learned that I wanted to work as an independent image consultant and work with clients one-on-one.
In 2017, I launched K. Makini Image Consulting. K. Makini Image Consulting provides personal styling, shopping and wardrobe makeover services for men and women. I work with high achieving professionals to create their own, custom style and enhance their verbal and nonverbal communication skills. It’s all about looking the part all while achieving your wildest dreams!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is to see how my clients transform after working with me. I always include my client’s perspectives while revamping their style as they are the ones that will be wearing the new outfits! They have to love what they are wearing or they will only wear it once. I like to put together outfits that they are proud of and will gravitate to every time they open their closets.
Also, when a client refers me to another potential client, there’s no better feeling! That means that I did a pretty good job!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I would have learned that image consulting was an actual profession years ago. I feel that had I known that in high school, it would have changed the directive of my career. I have 2 degrees, Finance and Business Administration with a background in Bankruptcy Law. Although my education is important and I’m very grateful, learning more about how the image consulting industry worked earlier in life would have been beneficial.
Recently I had an opportunity to meet a few high school students in DFW that are taking fashion design courses as electives. I was floored at how advanced the students were in fashion design at such a young age. From learning how to create patterns to stitching garments, these students inspired me. It taught me to never give up on your dreams no matter your age!
