We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kilo Posh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kilo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue a creative path was when I was a kid, watching Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video. That moment filled me with such intense emotions—fear, groove, awe. The creativity was mind-blowing, and seeing it all done by a person of color opened my eyes to new possibilities. Music was always around me. I’d go to Blockbuster and rent musicals like Cats and The Nightmare Before Christmas, and outside of sports, I loved going to the theater for plays and ballets.
My family’s musical background played a huge role too. My grandmother was a traveling organ player for churches, one uncle was a producer in the Midwest, and another uncle in the Bahamas, Kinky Foxx, played drums for the Funkadelics. I picked up the viola at age 8, played in orchestra until college, and built a foundation in classical music theory. But it wasn’t just about playing music; I also had a passion for discovering and managing talent.
In high school, I became the local A&R and music manager. Everyone sent me their tracks to critique, and I gained a reputation as the moody music connoisseur, always knowing the next big thing. Managing a rap group called N9C9—the “Midwest Wu-Tang”—was my pride and joy. I booked shows, coordinated events, and handled all the logistics, much like what I do today with AFTRDRK Studios, but now I’m the one performing.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a DJ and event curator based in Dallas, focused on creating inclusive, welcoming spaces for marginalized communities. My journey into the industry was fueled by a deep passion for music and a desire to build environments that encourage self-expression and connection.
I run AFTRDRK Studios, which focuses on producing events that prioritize safety and inclusivity in nightlife. My goal with AFTRDRK is to address the lack of spaces where people from diverse backgrounds feel seen, heard, and free to express themselves. It’s not just about throwing parties—it’s about building community and creating environments that empower individuals to be their authentic selves.
What sets me apart is my commitment to ensuring that every AFTRDRK event brings people together in a space where they feel valued and can connect meaningfully with others. I also founded CD Club, a monthly event where creatives explore their favorite albums and dive into music’s therapeutic qualities.
I’m most proud of the impact AFTRDRK has made, creating spaces where people feel seen and appreciated. My work goes beyond entertainment—it’s about cultivating spaces where everyone feels they belong. If you’re seeking a blend of music and community, AFTRDRK is where you’ll find it.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Honestly, if society wants to truly support artists and creatives, it’s time to cut out the gatekeeping and start showing real love. We’re all out here pouring our souls into our work, and there’s plenty of room for everyone to shine. Instead of copying or competing, let’s expand the scene. Share each other’s posts, show up to events, make those genuine recommendations. Stop acting like there can only be one.
It’s not about hoarding the spotlight; it’s about creating a fly ass galaxy. When we uplift each other, we elevate the entire creative ecosystem. So let’s drop the unnecessary competition and embrace collaboration. Attend that art show, repost that new track, tell your friends about that amazing designer you discovered. Together, we can build a community where everyone’s talents are celebrated. Let’s make support the new Kool.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the opportunity to create spaces where people feel truly seen and appreciated. Through AFTRDRK Studios and CD Club, I’ve been able to foster communities that celebrate individuality and encourage authentic self-expression. It’s incredibly fulfilling to witness how music and art can bring people together, breaking down barriers and building genuine connections. Seeing attendees at my events feel comfortable to be themselves reminds me why I embarked on this journey. It’s about more than just the music; it’s about making a positive impact and contributing to a more inclusive and supportive community.
