Kiara, appreciate you joining us today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Stepping out on faith and going into entrepreneurship is one of the biggest risk I’ve taken in life. Growing up, my mother was a cosmetologist and I would always assist her with clients. Although I began to do hair at a very young age and was somehow good at it, it was not a career I saw for myself. After graduating high school, I enrolled into college and decided to get my degree in Accounting. After working in accounting for 5 years, I realized that it didn’t fulfill me. Shortly after, I enrolled into cosmetology school and continued to work my full time job. While in school, I was able to build my clientele with loyal clients. After 1500 hours of studying, I received my cosmetology license during the pandemic. I continued to my make full time job my primary source of income because it was convenient and guaranteed money. I would do hair after work and on weekends. My clientele continued to increase and I soon realized this is what fulfilled me. I had to make a decision that would change my life for the good or the bad. I decided to turn my passion into my career. Having a clientele of loyal clients allowed my transition to be seamless. I’ve been a full time entrepreneur for 6 years now and I’m so glad that I took the risk.

Hi, my name is Kiara Chanell also known as KC. I have been in the hair industry full time for 6 years now. Although I’ve been full time for 6 years, hair is something I’ve done for most of my life. Some of my main services are braids, sew-ins, and natural hair services. I service both men and women. Something that sets me apart from others is my love and care for my clients. Hair is not just something I do but something I’m very passionate about. I take great pride in educating my clients on how to grow and maintain healthy hair. My goal is to provide the best customer service and leave a smiling face on my clients. I’m most proud of the success that I have achieved while on this journey. I’m also proud to be the first one in my family to step out into entrepreneurship and be successful at it.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy of growing my clientele has been word of mouth and fostering genuine connections with my clients. The trust that I’ve established with my loyal clients has brung about new clients through referrals. Also, sharing my creative process on social media has helped me gain new clients from all over the country.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe that my dedication to my craft helped build my reputation in this market. I’m a very thorough person and I dedicate the time to study and perfect my craft. I always strive to provide my clients with not just a service, but an exceptional experience while in my chair. My authenticity, punctuality, and flexibility has allowed me expand in ways unimaginable.
