Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Khamphet Phommahaxay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Khamphet , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The idea behind our business started with our passion and love of ice cream. We were inspired by a style of ice cream we had in Japan that focused on fresh, organic and whole ingredients. Since then, it has become our dream to open a unique soft serve ice cream and cafe, offering simple, natural ingredients and high quality products that everyone can enjoy. Our soft serve ice cream is made in small batches, using local organic milk. The flavors are inspired by the wonderful food memories we had from childhood and summer travels. We create unique combinations that marry east and west flavors. The result is a light, but creamy texture that delivers big flavors and lots of smiles. We felt our idea would work because we are pairing a unique approach to ice cream flavors with a perfect location. We were attracted by the feel of the neighborhood, one that combines a feeling of the new and fresh with historic charm . It is a place for the community, a walkable square that is a convenient place to meet and gather. Downtown McKinney is not just a location, it’s a destination.

Khamphet , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Miruku Creamery + Café is a family-owned business, built from the ground up. Kham has a culinary background and graduated from Le Cordon Bleu. Yim was a home goods designer with an entrepreneurial spirit. We moved to Dallas in 2010 and launched a Thai fusion food truck called Yim Yam in 2014.
Like many families during the pandemic, we had to learn to adapt to the ever changing situation around us. During this time, we re-evaluated what we wanted to do, what we were really passionate about, and made a decision to accelerate our ideas to focus on a brick and mortar ice cream and cafe. We knew it might be a risk during uncertain times, but we felt confident about our idea and our ability to translate our passion into a viable business. .
We spent a lot of time over the last two years visiting locations around the DFW area. After visiting McKinney square, we knew this was the perfect spot for us. With our combined culinary and design experience, we felt we could make Miruku Creamery + Café into a neighborhood place for everyone to enjoy.
Miruku Creamery + Cafe allows us to connect with the local community. Families and friends come in together and are able to share an experience, make memories and enjoy a sweet and fun moment together. Seeing children and adults delighted by the sundaes, trying new flavor combinations they haven’t seen before, or enjoying our cotton candy is really meaningful. We provide a service that makes people smile, and that is truly gratifying
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
We use locally sourced, high quality, whole ingredients, to create unique flavor combinations. Whether we’re making ice cream, espresso drinks, or creamy shakes, that focus, combined with our passion really makes us unique. .
We frequently rotate our selections to keep things fresh and provide people with new flavors to try. We have classics like milk and chocolate, but we also have unique flavors, including some with Asian influences like matcha, Thai tea, ube or lychee. Our Miruku sundaes set us apart from other shops. Our most popular sundaes, the Day Dream, includes a halo of cotton candy with ice cream and a pirouette cookie, and our affogato sundae that combines milk ice cream with fresh espresso poured on top served with a dalgona honeycomb candy and waffle crisp. Our Berry Berry sundae features milk ice cream with berries compote, signature cornflake crunch and topped with a warm croffle (think waffle + croissant).

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Social media and word of mouth from happy customers are the best validation that we’re doing something that really resonates with the community. The City of McKinney is also playing a big part in promoting businesses like ours on social media and through special events in town that helps introduce us to more people in the community.
