We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kevin Vierling. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kevin below.
Kevin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
My parents taught me, directly and indirectly, the power of hard work. Hard work meant putting in the time, seeing tasks through completion and finally, taking pride in your work. By putting in time and hard work, a great deal of satisfaction is realized and it demonstrates the character of the worker.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
All my life I’ve been interested in systems, making things work and understanding processes. As an IT professional, I came across the wireless sector. Specifically, I came across cellular networks. I had no previous experience in this field but my intuition told me that wireless communications were going to be a big part of our world in the future. After landing a job with a company that specialized in providing cellular boosters indoors, I quickly became enamored and intrigued with the possibilities that this industry would bring. 17 years later, the industry went from 2G to 5G and I have been along for the ride.
In my career, I found my biggest strength was in my ability to understand my audience. I could easily talk shop with the best of them, but found the real power was in making non-technical people understand the technology and solutions that are possible. To this day, I enjoy talking to people who need problems solved. I take pleasure in being able to articulate the technical items in a way that is clearly understood.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
For a period of time, I wanted to start a business. I wanted it to be 100% mine so that I could fully control the direction and culture of it. Since I did not want outside investment and to give up ownership, I started to save my money from my salaried jobs. Over time, I saved enough money to support myself so I could start the business I wanted. I saved enough money for 6 months of living expenses. During that time, I lived more frugal and did what I needed to cover business expense. I was able to cover most business expenses for the first year by consulting and by year 1.5, the business started to generate income.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My reputation has been formed based on my honesty, my integrity (I do what I say I will do), and by my perseverance (no problem is too challenging). People know that when they work with me, I will be in the trenches with them to solve problems. I make their problems, my problems. I do not rest until I know my customer is satisfied and happy with the outcome.
