Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kevin Moore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kevin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
At the top of my list are being humble and teachable and operating with integrity (especially when no one is watching). If you have humility (not low self-esteem), you instantly propel yourself way ahead of the pack, because it’s such an uncommon trait nowadays. It may take a while for character and integrity to produce fruit, but when they do, the harvest is much better and long-lasting. Sure, talent can open doors, but humility enables you to stay in the room. Humility empowers you to receive correction (even from those who mistreat you), keep quiet when you have a “right” to defend yourself, and most importantly hear what God is saying, One of my former pastors says that, “Humility means ‘agreeing with God.'” James 4:13-16 tells us that we aren’t promised tomorrow. And that boasting about it is evil.
If you stay humble and surround yourself with people who have gone further than you have, you can continually improve your skills and talents. As you step into new opportunities with God and act upon them with integrity, He will continue to open new doors of opportunity for you (Revelation 3:8.
Kevin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I inherited my business from a man named Otis Gillaspie. His family has a history of giving things away when God asks them. His mother donated a church building and the surrounding land to OpenDoor Church in Burleson. After a Wednesday evening service, Otis came up to me and asked me to get involved with him. He told me, “God has asked me to abandon my business and go into full-time ministry. He told me I could trust you. I’d like you to come work with me.” After about 5 months, he turned the entire business over to me. I had a history of working in small businesses and startups (mostly operations), but the water industry was completely new to me. Thankfully, my team has been amazing and we have grown the company at an average rate of 23% per year.
We offer water treatment solutions for all sorts of applications, including: under-sink, whole home tanks & ROs, ranches, private islands, restaurants, hotels, manufacturing, beverage & alcohol production, well-water treatment, and many more. We offer great products with good warranties, fair prices, and excellent customer service. In addition, we have an outside 24/7 water dispenser that delivers both RO and ALKALINE water to refill your water jugs. For full service, please visit us between 9:30 and 5:00 pm (M-F, except holidays).
We stand behind everything we sell and the service we offer. We are proud of our 5.0 rating on Google (70 review w/ 69 5-stars). The one review that was not 5-star was from someone who was never a customer of ours. After much research, we have been unable to find out who he is. Maybe it is one of our competitors!
We serve the entire DFW Metroplex and then some. We have traveled as far as Rockport, TX to help some clients with very specific needs. Hopefully, we can serve you at some point in the near future.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In June of 2019, our business had only one technician. All of the pressure for service & repairs fell on him. It was a difficult time because we didn’t yet have the funds to hire another full-time technician. We ended up hiring our second one a few months later. He resigned, via text on a Sunday, in the middle my son’s 17th birthday party celebration! That next week was very challenging. We had to use several contractors to complete our installs and service calls for the week. My technician and I had several talks about why he left, how to improve the business, and the possibility of us trying to make it work, together. He returned to his post the following Monday and we turned things around. We are great friends to this day.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
We built our business the hard way, but the best way. We have tried partnering with other businesses, but it seems they always want to make a quick buck at the expense of their customers. We don’t believe in over-selling or offering products that our clients don’t need. We treat each customer as if we were installing or servicing equipment in our own homes. Bottom line: we aren’t the cheapest, but we believe we offer the best service in the industry. You can count on us and you can trust us. By operating in this fashion, we can sleep at night, we have happier customers, and our reviews are much better! Over time, we have gotten a lot of referrals, especially for large projects and custom applications. Word of mouth is the most solid way to build a business, but it takes time and consistent effort.
