We were lucky to catch up with Kevin Mcwhirk recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kevin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
The firearms training and self-defense industry has grown significantly, driven by increased fears and uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns about rising crime. Despite inflation, the industry along with gun sales has seen steady growth as people recognize the importance of being their own first responders. There’s been a notable rise in young people and women enrolling in training programs to learn about their Second Amendment rights and self-defense skills. I believe this is why overall gun ownership for first time owners has risen. This reflects a growing commitment to understanding firearms and legal responsibilities including personal protection.

Kevin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Getting into firearms training has a special significance for me, as it began with learning skills from my father at a young age. The time we spent wasn’t just about handling a firearm; they were about bonding, responsibility, and understanding the importance of safety. I remember the times we spent together as father and son, his hands guiding mine, teaching me not just the mechanics but the respect and discipline that come with handling a firearm.
Many may not know many of these skills are perishable, and we must strive to continually improve our skills and training. I understand the deeper meaning of protecting oneself and others. It encompasses being prepared, staying vigilant, and knowing how to act responsibly in critical or life threatening situations by an apex predator. Learning these skills isn’t just empowering; it’s about ensuring that safety is always a top priority. It’s a commitment to being ready for situations that can be unfavorable and unpredictable. Understanding the gravity of this right and responsibility that comes with carrying a firearm leads to making informed decisions that prioritize the safety of everyone involved.
For me, firearms training is more than just a practical skill—it’s a lifelong journey of learning, growth, and an unwavering dedication to safety and responsibility. It’s about honoring the lessons my father taught me and passing on those values to others.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele revolves around integrity, patience, and understanding. These pillars build a foundation of trust and solidarity with students and clients.
Integrity ensures you consistently deliver on your promises, fostering reliability.
Patience allows you to build strong, lasting relationships by valuing long-term growth over quick gains.
Understanding each client’s unique needs and circumstances helps you provide personalized experiences, making them feel valued and respected.
By prioritizing these principles, you establish a trustworthy reputation, encouraging client loyalty and word-of-mouth referrals, which are essential for sustainable growth.
Many friendships have developed over the years as a result of these ideals. This leads to fostering longer, lasting relationships that will endure long after classes have ended.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Jocko Willink and David Goggins have profoundly impacted my leadership, management, and overall approach to running SAFE. From Jocko’s teachings in “Extreme Ownership,” I’ve learned the critical importance of owning every aspect of my responsibilities, embracing accountability, and instilling discipline as the cornerstone of success. Goggins’ relentless pursuit of pushing past limits in “Can’t Hurt Me” has inspired me to tackle the hardest tasks head-on, to face failure without fear, and to see it as a valuable teacher rather than a setback. By integrating these principles, I’ve cultivated a culture of resilience, dedication, and continuous improvement within SAFE, ensuring that every mistake is a learning opportunity that propels us toward future success.
