We recently connected with Kenya Renfroe and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenya , thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Growing up my nickname was kk, so I took that and decided to add some letters to spell out Khay. I was struggling with it for a bit and then had a dream and heard myself explaining to someone about my business and I called it Khay Kolor Beauty.

Kenya , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kenya and I am the owner of Khay Kolor Beauty. I am a military wife and stay at home mommy of 2. I started this business in 2020 just selling lipstick. I rebranded my business and started offering more products. I am in the process of rebranding again, and starting to find my target audience. I sell body butter, lip scrub, face serum, and lipstick. My man audience is mothers (especially postpartum mothers) I want them to understand how important it is to make themselves a priority. I started this business in hopes to help mothers who are going through postpartum. I know I didn’t feel like myself after having both children, and to just be able to take a shower and smell clean afterwards was enough for me to be able to smile and get through the day. So I started making body butter and face serum because even though it’s not much it will still help mothers feel a little better during the day. Now anyone can shop from my store but my main focus is mothers.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to stop being afraid that I wouldn’t be accepted! When I started this business it was always mothers were my target audience but I was afraid that wouldn’t be accepted or I was going to be laughed at or judged. But it was hard trying to find my niche because I just couldn’t get pass the fact that I don’t want to be judged. Some people are rude but that shouldn’t stop you from being who you were meant to be and doing what you were meant to do. Keep pushing and I’l kill then with kindness

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
So I started out on Instagram and that didn’t get anywhere so I made a Facebook page and that didn’t go anywhere. I tried posting on every social media platform except tik tok because I refused to use it. Now I wish I had a time machine to go back and start instead of trying to play catch-up with everyone. My one advice would be to just go for it. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity so just do it. I’m not where I want to be on social media but I’m still growing everyday.
