We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kennedie Scurry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kennedie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
If I could start over, I would make my life more about myself and not other people. Worrying about other people other than your life and what you need to do causes you to put yourself last. I’ve had my times where I had put myself first but I wasn’t consistent in the act.
I would take saving more serious to make better investments to have ownership over my things. With the things I would posses, I would still have the humble heart along with it because I know that anything I gain can taken away just as fast as it came.
Putting myself first would help me show up better in other areas in my life and have better life experiences. I don’t take anything for granted because with lessons comes changes.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Kennedie but the public calls me Kenlo. The names derived from the clothing brand Polo because my father and I would wear it frequently. In addition to that, an old friend of mine were talking about nicknames with one another and a light bulb went off in my dad’s head. He randomly said, “What about Kenlo?.” We liked what we heard and I started using that name. Everybody saw the name change on social media (MYSPACE).
Me and my father always had a close bond and we would talk about various topics. So he brought the idea up about starting a blog and I didn’t think much of it because I thought it would be “boring”. At the time I was still in high school but a year later I experienced depression caused my losing my late sister and my first heartbreak. This lead me to want to start my blog, The Kenlo Show, from a positive stand point. The more I stayed consistent, the brand began to grow and I started meeting more/new people who were creatives.
The Kenlo Show provides services which entail Interviews, Media Coverages and Write Ups. Other blogs do provide these services and maybe more but I don’t like to come from a “polished” point of view. I feel like what separates me from others is the fact people can show up and be exactly who they are, speak on themselves and their craft unapologetically and leave with something they can’t forget.
I’m proud of the fact that when I did want to give up, I didn’t give up but I went back to the drawing board. I also took time away from the brand in 2022 to work on myself and get more organized. Word of advice: your mental health is more important than anything or anybody.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had to pivot in my creative career and life at the same time. Because I didn’t feel fulfilled in my life I took a break for myself and my life. I’ve wanted to experience all realms of life to I feet and the lessons and blessings that come with it. I’ve also let myself feel through these situations. My main goal was to get back in therapy because I didn’t want to be that friend or gamy member to emotionally dump on people when there are people who get paid to listen to you. Not to mention, I didn’t want to lose out on these friendships due to my shortcomings.
These people have also taught me that they are filled with the love that I always seek and I’ve always been surrounded by it. This goes to say that I wanted to focus more on my self-love, the people that truly care about me and be more grateful for the life I have.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Non-creatives, in my opinion wouldn’t understand how many times a day (day and night) how your creative makes you feel “crazy” because of how grandiose your ideas can be. Also because how clear you can see your vision. The more you think about it, you can make it happen. In addition this takes planning, consistency and because life happens you also need a lot of patience with yourself.
Be able to have grace for yourself as much as you do for others. That’s a payment to yourself.
