Kennay , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?

I learned makeup from practicing and also going to school. I attended Beat school of makeup artistry in Pikesville MD. I graduated May of 2025 and received my certification from the state of Maryland. My hands-on practice combined with formal training has prepared me for my new career. I was recently hired by Sephora as a LBA. As a licensed Beauty Advisor at Sephora in Towson Mall I offer a variety of services such as personalized skincare consultations, makeup application, product recommendations, beauty tutorials, and helping customers find the best products that suits to their skin types and preferences.

I recognized that my true passion lies in helping people feel beautiful through cosmetics. If I stayed consistent with practicing outside of my pharmacy technician job I could’ve significantly accelerate my progress towards the beauty industry. Overcoming the obstacle of self-doubt or complacency is often the key to unlocking new opportunities. My focus toward a career in beauty andcosmetics might bring me greater fulfillment and happiness. Embracing my passion fully is leading me to a more satisfying and authentic professional life. I’m happy i’m stepping outside my comfort zone and making gradual changes to transition towards my dream career.

Starting as a beauty content creator in 2021 allowed me to build a strong foundation of expertise, audience engagement, and a portfolio showcasing my skills and style. My experience naturally transitioned into offering makeup services and understanding of beauty trends made clients trust my talents. My content demonstrated my technical skills and creativity providing social proof that encouraged followers to seek my personalized services thereby turning my passion for beauty into a professional career.

Having over 100k in monthly engagement with 3,400 followers on Instagram truly highlights how strong my connection and authenticity with my audience which sets me apart as a small creator. This high level of engagement indicates that my content resonates deeply fostering genuine interactions and loyalty regardless of follower count. My ability to create meaningful content that captivates and stimulates my community.

Step 1: Be Yourself
Building an audience on social media requires consistency, authenticity, and engagement; I started by sharing genuine content that resonated with my target audience regularly posting and interacting with followers to foster community. To those just beginning, I recommend defining a clear niche, creating high-quality content that provides value, and staying active by responding to comments and messages. Patience is key—growth often takes time, but maintaining authenticity and consistency will help cultivate a loyal and engaged community over time.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

A key lesson nothing or no one can stop what’s for you. The backstory involves early experiences where I faced setbacks and misunderstood them as failures but through reflection I learned that each challenge is an opportunity for growth, and that changing my environment and perspective can lead to better outcomes. This shift in mindset has empowered me to embrace losses as lessons knowing they pave the way for future success.
