We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kelly Scott. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kelly below.
Hi Kelly, thanks for joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have always loved all things arts and crafts — my first email was craftygirl22@sbcglobal.net HA! I asked for any kind of craft kit that could exist for every birthday. I have also loved all things mail and letter writing. When I went to college, I got all my friends addresses and wrote snail mail back and forth while we were apart. So, in 2020 I put the two together and started Kelly Scott Design Co. – my greeting card business. The idea behind it is that each card brings joy. Joy for the shopper who is thinking of all the people in their lives that would be perfect for each card. Joy as you fill the card with words of love and affirmation. And joy for the recipient of the card as they have a tangible reminder that they’re loved and seen. I mean who doesn’t love receiving a physical card?!

Kelly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always loved doing anything with art!! Took art classes in high school, tried just about every craft I could, etc. I started an Etsy shop in 2015 with my sister called, By Kelly and Anna. It was full of painted canvases that we sold for so cheap, that we barely made any money. From then, I pivoted into cards during COVID when mail was about the only thing still running. From then, I added hangers for bridal parties that I would calligraphy their names on the hanger – those were a hit, but did not end up being something I enjoyed. From then, I really tried to hone in on the greeting cards. I have puns on a majority of my cards and am constantly thinking of new ones to add to a card. I love doing in-person markets and selling my cards in stores around Nashville and across the US. I sell my cards wholesale on Faire and am always looking to have my cards in more stores!! My biggest accomplishment is getting to make a custom card for Noah Kahan last Fall! I got an email from his manager and was completely shocked – I couldn’t believe I got the opportunity to make a card for him!

How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I sell my products on Etsy and has found this is best for me! I have tried my own website as well. For me personally, I love Etsy! Etsy drives a lot of traffic to my shop and that alone was worth it for me, even if they do take a percentage of the sales. I have a lot of repeat customers on there and have really loved the platform. If you are starting on Etsy, don’t be discouraged – follow some of these tips I’ve learned over the years! Use all the keywords you can – think about what people would use to search your product and use those. The more products, the merrier – take the time to create and list products to bring more traffic to your shop. Follow people on social media who are already doing it and ask questions!! I’d be happy to answer any questions if this is you.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
In person markets! I spent a couple years attending about every market that I could in the Nashville area. This was a great space to meet people in person and put a face to the business. This brought a lot of repeat customer and new clients as well!
