We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kellie Lunsford a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kellie, thanks for joining us today. Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
I have so many examples to share but I start with truly connecting with each and every client in an authentic way.. my relationships with my clients are very important to me so I’m constantly showing them so much gratitude verbally and through my attention to details in their lives.. I like to joke that not only am I a Hair colorist, I’m a grief counselor, their biggest cheerleader, and also their Astrologer..

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started out as an assistant at a big, successful salon and received amazing continued education and great marketing and business skills from them.. I was there for over 17years and decided to go out on my own.. It was a scary decision but I knew I was ready to create my own brand and customize my business to my personality… I created a space that I wanted my clients to feel a sense of calm, zen like feel.. a place that they received one on one attention and could feel safe to talk to me about anything without others around.. I felt that was important.. I feel it’s important to do a thorough consultation so we together can have a plan that works for their lifestyle and budget.. I absolutely love doing natural looking hair color .. Some would say I am a blonde specialist and that is true but also love doing all kinds of hair color.. I feel what sets me apart from others is that I want to make my clients feel beautiful and heard.. Connecting is vital to me and love nurturing my clients who I also consider my friends. I offer all types of hair coloring, Keratin Smoothing treatments and just added to my services Astrology Natal chart readings cause my clients were requesting it so often.. it’s an interesting,fun add on that I’m passionate about.Im so proud of my business and my clients that have been seeing me for over 20years and so very loyal.. I even have clients that continue to come to me that live in other states and that fills me with so much love . My business is my passion and I feel it’s my calling to cultivate relationships with my clients so that they receive the whole package with me(friend, counselor,cheerleader, confidant and beauty expert)

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Consistency is key.. also taking the time to talk about what hair color you want and figuring out a realistic schedule and a realistic budget to achieve your hair color.. that goes a very long way and something that I feel isn’t talked about enough .. also my authentic personality.. I do not have an attitude that my client is lucky to be sitting in my chair.. more so the attitude of gratitude that they want to come to me and trust me to take care of their hair color needs

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
After Covid everything changed in our industry.. but something I did not see coming was so many people moving out of state cause they could work remotely so I had clients that moved away and I had to find new clients.. I’ve been lucky to have such a great clientele but had to recover the loss of those clients by getting new ones .. I wanted quality clients not quantity. So client referrals was the way to go.. I trusted that they would send me those quality clients by being my advertisement.. and in return they both would receive a percentage off that service.. It has worked brilliantly..
