Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kecia Fowler. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kecia, appreciate you joining us today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
One of the most defining moments in my journey came when I was in my first semester of an intensive Traditional Chinese Medicine program. I was trying to make sense of Eastern Theory through the framework of everything I’d previously learned in Western Anatomy and physiology. I kept trying to fit concepts like Qi, meridians and the five elements into the linear, compartmentalized boxes I’d been trained in and nothing was landing.
Eventually I hit a wall. It wasn’t just a moment of confusion – it was a moment of surrender. I realized that everything I thought I knew meant absolutely nothing in this new context. That realization was strangely liberating. I had to let go of what I thought I understood and empty out in order to truly receive. That surrender became the foundation of everything that has followed.
It was the beginning of a much deeper way of listening, perceiving and working from my heart, my hands and the space between. It was not only career shift, but a deep shift of consciousness.

Kecia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In 1999 I was working in a field that was not really providing much satisfaction beyond a nice paycheck. The people that I was working with seemed to have a great deal of passion and drive for it. One night I found myself making a list of things that I might feel that passionate about. The “if I could do anything in the world, what would it be” list. After doing some research I signed up for an introductory class for Massage Therapy. Sitting there and learning about the musculoskeletal system felt like coming home! I was reminded of being a kid and sitting with the encyclopedia book about anatomy and layering the transparent pages to demonstrate the systems in the human body. It was one of my favorite things to look at! I knew, sitting in that class, that this was definitely the path that I wanted to take. I completed the program and started practicing therapeutic massage and was then able to start teaching Anatomy and Physiology in that school. While I was expanding my own knowledge and skillset I thoroughly enjoyed helping others to understand the human body.
I believe that this is something I continue to offer to each and every patient that I treat today. I love helping people understand how their body functions, how energy moves and how their unique system speaks. I approach the body as a system of physical, energetic and spiritual aspects and when I enter the room with a patient I experience a deeply innate ability to listen that transcends the ears. Something happens as I am listening and I am guided in how to support that person in that moment. I am guided by the principles of ancient medicine and the subtle language of the body. While I practice Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, meditation and Zero Balancing my work is ultimately about listening. I listen to the body, to the energy and to the spirit of a person. Each session is a meeting place where deep presence allows what’s beneath the surface to be seen, held and gently shifted. I attune to the patterns and imbalances, but also to what wants to emerge – the healing intelligence already within. My work is not about fixing what is broken. it’s about reconnecting to wholeness, restoring harmony and inviting a sense of alignment. It is about guiding a person back to a sense of safety and alignment within themselves and the world. Healing is not something I “do” to someone; it’s something we explore together.
My path has woven together therapeutic massage, teaching anatomy & Physiology, Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine, Zero Balancing and meditation – each one offering a different way of seeing and supporting the body, mind and spirit. These disciplines have not just shaped my skills, but my way of perceiving and being with people. In each session, I draw from this rich foundation to listen deeply – beyond words, beyond symptoms – to what the whole person is expressing.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Embarking on a journey of learning about Chinese Medicine was an enlightening experience. It was also a turning point in my journey as I came to recognize that to truly understand Chinese Medicine and Eastern philosophy, I first had unlearn much of what I had absorbed through a western lens. Even though I had been practicing in the holistic health field for many years, this was difficult as my only frame of reference was still very westernized.
I had to let go of linear thinking, fixed diagnoses and the impulse to “fix”. Instead I had to learn to attune too patterns, cycles, relationships and the subtle language of balance and flow.
This unlearning became its own kind of healing – one that continues to unfold and informs every session I offer. In the treatment space, I bring together the precision of anatomy, the depth of Chinese Medicine, the clarity of touch and the spaciousness of meditative presence. My work is not about technique, but meeting each person where they are, supporting their process with insight, care and respect for their inner wisdom.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I often say that if I had known exactly what I was getting myself into that I would have likely talked myself out of it. If I had any insight about how much unlearning it was going to take in order to absorb the principles of eastern philosophies, I certainly would have come up with many reasons why none of that was possible. However, I have zero regret on embarking on that journey and taking what was a huge leap of faith. If I had to choose again, I would choose this path a thousand times over. This year marks 10 years in practice for me and somehow, I feel even more inspired, more fulfilled and more in awe of this work than I did at the beginning. I couldn’t have imagined then just how deeply this path would shape me – not only as a practitioner but as a human being.
The journey has been full of challenges, self examination, and the kind of growth that asks everything of you. But is has also been full of wonder. Every day I witness the intelligence of the human body, the depth of spirit and the quiet powerful ways that Chinese medicine helps people return to balance and connection. My mind is regularly blown – not by what I do, but by what emerges when I get out of the way and let the medicine, the body and the person’s own wisdom lead.
It is a practice in the truest sense. A living, evolving relationship with healing, with presence, and with the mystery that moves through us all.
