Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Keaton Boss. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Keaton thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Right when I started college (January 2022), a member of a band that I’ve been following for a while posted on instagram that he recently built a recording studio in Southern California. In the comments, he stated that he is wanting to record some people’s music and included an email address to communicate through. I remember sitting in my new apartment contemplating whether or not I should reach out. I had recorded some suboptimal demos on my phone during Covid, with just me and an acoustic guitar. But I was hesitant to send such amateur sounding recordings.
I finally convinced myself that if I ever wanted to record my own songs, then now is the time to do it. I probably sent 4-5 songs, and to my surprise, he liked them! After a couple of zoom sessions, we worked out the kinks, and solidified the structure of each song. 6 months later, I drove out to his studio and recorded those 5 songs that I originally sent. Because I took that risk of reaching out, I have my first EP officially released. And I could not be happier with how it has turned out.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Like a lot of people, I find that music is what I spend most of my time consuming. Music is one of the most influential, and prominent sources of entertainment in our lives. Whether we are working out, shopping, driving, or working; we always find ourselves filling that time with music. I am a true believer that music can greatly affect our state of mind. Some of the best times that I’ve had have been attending concerts with my friends/family. Meeting new people, and connecting over our same taste in music is such a unique and gratifying experience. I take that into consideration when writing and performing my own music.
I like to think that I’m a “glass half full” kind of person, and I try to incorporate that into my writing. I have written songs about depression, anxiety, divorce, substance abuse, and the passing of loved ones. But in those songs, I think the biggest message that I have tried to convey is hope. I believe that hope can change our perspective on any type of situation. Music has influenced us for hundreds, if not thousands of years. And if my music can have an influence on just one person, then I think I would be doing my job right.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a musician is to perform. Being able to play the songs I wrote and have people sing along is one of the most fulfilling experiences I’ve ever had. Having people connect to the music is the whole point of being an artist.
Being able to convey an idea or emotion is not an easy task. If you use the wrong word, or annunciate the wrong way, the story that you’re trying to tell can get completely thrown off. But, once you’re able to get overcome that obstacle, it is worth the effort.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I would say the best resources are the people who share your same interests. It doesn’t matter if you’re into drawing, painting, writing, or playing music. Sharing your art, and collaborating on a common interest can be the best way to grow your creativity. Getting an outside perspective on something can not only help improve what you’re working on, but can also help expand your creativity.
Some of my favorite songs that I’ve written have been collaborations with other artists. I’ve had a few instances where I’d have a basic outline of a song written, but I didn’t know how to move forward. Taking those rough drafts and working together with someone can make all the difference in the world. Just be open to any ideas, because you never know what’s going to happen.
