We recently connected with Kay Thomas and have shared our conversation below.

Kay, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.

This story is more so of the crazy way I went full time in my business. My senior year of college I was working my business part time. I graduated college in May 2018. I already had job interviews lined up. By mid June I had already started and quit about 4 to 5 jobs. The last job i got hired at was a door to door job selling cable and internet. I felt like it would be a breeze because I’m good with conversing with people and I’m good in sales. I hated the hours there because I wasn’t able to work on my business how I normally would. As apart of the job they gave employees iPads so we would be able to work. By the second week on the job I was frustrated and had missed working my business so much, but I didn’t want to give up on my 9-5. I couldn’t take it anymore; it got to a point that I would turn off the location on my iPad and would partially go put in work for my business. One day the boss of that job asked why he wasn’t able to track me on the iPad then it finally clicked! I had a full clientele and I was ready to quit that job. I knew no matter what I did I would always go back to my passion. So I turned my passion into my paycheck!

Kay, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

My name is Kay Thomas and my brand is “TheCosmoKay”. I’m a Master Cosmetologist, licensed in two states (GA and SC), that specializes in hair and skin care. I offer hair services such as hair and scalp treatments, coloring, weaving, and natural hair care. I offer skin services such as body waxing and facials. One of the products I offer are 100% virgin hair extensions. The extensions and wigs come in seven different textures, lengths up to 40 inches, and a variety of colors. Another product I offer is my own formulated hair oil. The hair oil is 100% natural made with jojoba oil, almond oil, and an essential oil blend. This oil has properties good for dandruff, dry/itchy scalp, hair growth, and scalp stimulation. TheCosmoKay is here to give you the Luxury hair experience!

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?

First and foremost, PLEASE BE CONSISTENT! When I first started my business social media was my best friend. I joined as many groups in my area and surrounding areas on Facebook that involved my business type. I used at least 5-6 hashtags on instagram. Now that TikTok is out you’re able to have better content and a worldwide range of audience. Work social media like a job. You should be posting at minimum three times a day (8-9am, 12-1pm, 6-7pm)

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

I was able to offer a wide range of services in my field. When I first got into the hair industry I wanted to know everything. I wanted to braid, do weaves, be able to wax, do nails, I wanted to do it all. I learned as many services as I could and I offered them. I made sure I was a well rounded stylist. As my business grew I was able to narrow it down to my niche.
