We recently connected with Katy Carl and have shared our conversation below.
Katy, appreciate you joining us today.
The most innovative thing I feel like was imperative to my career was leading with vulnerability. The entire process of building a business from the ground up with inventing new systems and processes – what worked for others was sure to not work for me. I had to find a way to build that for myself. When I found myself in a loophole, I had to remember why I started and first and foremost to trust myself.

Katy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a wedding photographer that serves fashion-forward couples by giving them a bespoke photography experience customized to fit the nature of their weekend events. What sets me apart from other photographers is in the client experience & in the background life experiences that I have. I’m multifaceted and that’s what helps me diversify an all-in experience with so many different types of people.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I get most of my clients from referrals or from colleagues in the wedding industry. It’s important to me to continue to give clients a great experience and when I know they are either from a past client or an industry connection, I immediately know if they’re a great fit.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
In my early years of developing as a professional I was like a sponge. I read so many leadership books that I will always reference and it kept me from feeling intimidated in rooms filled with powerful people. I greatly relied on mentorship and books. One of those books is called “Leading without Authority”. Being a woman in business has presented so many situations where I’ve realized being the master of my craft will always be questioned as long as I’m a female. This is changing among the younger generation now but women being trusted & heard will remain part of our history.
