We recently connected with Kathy Kay and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kathy, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I have always liked taking photos but it never crossed my mind to be photographing models or have regular people hire me to take their photos. I wished I had taken that photography class back in high school but considering how far I’ve come, I guess I have a good eye for detail from styling to directing or getting ideas from songs for my photoshoots, the creativity is there, . My biggest obstacle is the technical issues won’t lie my relationship with my camera is in its early stages and I got so much to learn and sometimes it’s all a blur..

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My husband is in the modeling industry and funny enough he constantly needs to keep his profile active, paying a professional to take his photos is definitely not in the budget, so I started doing it myself using my phone, I guess it worked as those photos got him noticed. As far as ending up somewhat in this industry, I will give the credit to my husband’s agent Denise Klein, who has always encouraged me to take photos and I guess coming from someone who has been in the modeling industry for as long as she has means I should listen, so here I am!! I started this journey back in my hometown Ecuador where I grew up and these past two years I have been fortunate enough to collaborate with amazing people and now that I’m back home in Miami, the inspiration is always there and I can’t wait to grab my camera and start creating stories with my photos and hope someone wants to feature my work which is probably what I’m most proud of, literally, seeing my work featured in digital fashion magazines is such an awesome humbling feeling, I know my work might not be everyone’s cup of tea, for me it’s not about perfection but capturing that moment, I can say it’s done with heart and soul. As far as the people who would consider collaborating with me, know that my priority is for you to feel your best, you know, that hidden you singing or posing in front of a mirror while getting ready, that inner you that you might feel too shy to show, that’s the one I’m looking for, you are not just a subject in front of my lens and our session is not just a photoshoot but a fun experience. Check out my work on Instagram @kathykayphotigraphy and if you like what you see, let’s make some magic together!!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I enjoy fashion photography, the styling when creating bald looks or thinking of particular scenarios to get those great shots. I have learned that modeling is hard work, that models also have insecurities like everyone else and that beneath those striking looks they are no different than you and I. My goal when it comes to photography is to collaborate with the regular everyday people, to show them that you don’t need to be a specific type to look great in photos, that we all have that uniqueness that makes us shine and to love and accept yourself, I want you to look at your photos and say “wow” I look amazing!!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I guess the fact that as people go through their feeds that somehow my work caught their eye and that a total stranger would take the time to comment on my work with kind words is rewarding and motivates me to keep trying.
