We recently connected with Kathryn Ann and have shared our conversation below.
Kathryn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you ever had an amazing boss, mentor or leader leading you? Can you us a story or anecdote that helps illustrate why this person was such a great leader and the impact they had on you or their team?
The best boss I ever had, was a female executive who led with wanting to know where I wanted to go with my career. She then took action to guide me there. She knew I wanted to focus on makeup artistry, and gifted me an event director chair for my own freelance work. She also chose me to do corporate video shoot work and fashion show work within the brand. I truly felt like she was a pivotal part of my dreams becoming a reality as a makeup artist.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am the creative, who didn’t pursue art until after high school. I was never the crafty type in school, because I was more focused on socializing and grades.
When my mother asked me what I wanted to go to college for, my first thought was – I’d like to take a break from school.
She was very firm on me continuing education, so I thought about what I am actually interested in learning in my free time. At that time it was me reading Cosmopolitan magazine articles, and binging on What Not To Wear, to learn styling.
I went to cosmetology school at the age of 18, but I really became a professional with my first employer, Estée Lauder.
Estée Lauder has high standards for their team and back that up with high standards on the education they provide. I worked in various positions with Estée Lauder from 2008-2014. In that time, I built a professional kit, and started freelancing. I will always feel molded as a professional by the training and development from Estée Lauder Companies. They truly invested in me as a young professional.
My interest started with makeup artistry, and developed in to health and wellness. I learned so much about nutrient benefits in skincare, which led to me studying holistic nutrition with a certification from The Institute of Integrative Nutrition. My passion is guiding others to truly feel beautiful, from the inside out.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I feel like non creatives will not understand that being creative is almost like having a different brain. While we have this energy to put in to creation, we may be very exhausted by other aspects of business and fitting in to professionalism standards.
As a creative, my biggest desire is to be respected and valued in my profession by others. I have felt like there is a paradigm shift in belief systems that needs to happen, for creatives to be valued for their work. Often times creative careers are not viewed as professional careers that will thrive. However, a creative puts so much of their energy and passion in to the result they deliver.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative, is to witness the bliss a client experiences from what we create. I get to see my client see themselves in a different “light” and genuinely admire themselves.
So often in the name of being humble, we refrain from admiring ourselves. In makeup artistry, it’s a shared experience where the artist gets to use their creativity with the existing features the client has, and there is a mutual exchange of admiration and gratitude. It’s truly beautiful.
