We recently connected with Katelyn Pike and have shared our conversation below.
Katelyn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
It took us a while to come up with “Honeycomb Films” as our name. We actually started under a completely different name 5 years ago, but about a year into our business we knew we wanted a name with meaning. Our business is run by my husband and I together, that is something special about Honeycomb Films. We are a married couple that love capturing the love of other married couples! So we knew we wanted the name to include something related to that.
When we met years ago, we met on a dating app = Bumble. After thinking through some important moments in our love story, we landed on trying to use a play in words with Bumble! After many, many variations of names… we finally landed on Honeycomb Films and never looked back! We absolutely love the name of our company, love the meaning behind it and get compliments on the name all the time. So happy we made the name change!
Katelyn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey! We are Katelyn and Matt – a husband and wife photo/video duo! We capture all of life’s sweetest moments through authentic and fun storytelling. Our videos and photos are personalized and heartfelt, and we promise that you and your loved ones will cherish them forever. We get to know you on a personal level, so your wedding video and photos are one of a kind, and are as unique as you two and your love.
We put our heart and soul into creating personalized, heartfelt videos and photos that tell a story focused on you, your love and your personalities. Starting with music and ending with those beautiful, colorful final touches, your vides and photos will get the time and attention they deserve – always.
Every film and picture, from start to finish, are hand crafted by Katelyn & Matt. Some people are shocked when they hear we fully work together in this company – and it’s true – we do! We love how our passion to create art allows us to be spend time, and get creative, together!
In creating this company, we made a promise to ourselves to not just be another vendor. We strive to always create a real relationship with our couples. You aren’t a transaction to us – you have a story to be told and have entrusted us to tell that story. We hold that very close to our heart and believe that the best way to tell your story is to truly get to know you on a personal level. We want to know what you love, what your favorite genre of music is, and you are most excited about for your wedding! We are here from the moment you book us till after your wedding day to help guide you through this process – this includes being your biggest fan!
We are full-time filmmakers who not only love what we do, but who we do it for: our couple’s. We understand the importance of your wedding video and give each couple and their film the time and attention they deserve. If this is what you are looking for from your wedding vendor – reach out on our website!!
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
When we started our business 5 years ago, neither of us (my husband or I) thought we’d ever go full time with Honeycomb Films. We always just viewed our company as a way to be creative together and build on our joint hobby together. But it became obvious as we started to grow that the growth wasn’t attainable while both of us worked full time jobs in addition to Honeycomb.
It was almost one whole year from when we decided that I would go full time till it actually happened. In a creative industry, and the wedding industry in particular, everything works in a 1 year calendar. Most people get engaged and plan a 1 year engagement. About 50% of our clients book up between 10-12 months before their big day (with the other 50% booking very last minute in the 2-4 month range). So there is definitely a period of waiting that had to happen in between booking clients and when I felt confident in going full time financially.
After making the decision that I would be the one to go full time, it was a lot of planning and waiting to make sure we didn’t rush the decision. But as our calendar hit its peak limit for fall of 2022 in spring of 2022, we knew it was time to make the jump. I am so glad I did! I don’t know how we would have made it through the fall and winter 2022 work load if I had a full time job during that time.
Making the jump to full time has now allowed us to grow in aways we wouldn’t have been able to if I still had another full time job. We can’t wait for the day that Matt get’s to go full time too and we can continue to grow!
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
For wedding videographers, How to Film Weddings is an amazing resource. Even for photographers that are interested in educating themselves on filmmaking and working with photographers, How to Film Weddings is a great resource. They have a podcast, YouTube channel, and paid courses. But one of the best parts is they have a Facebook group for the video community. Just to have others to bounce ideas off of, ask advice from, or share hardship (and celebrations) with is very helpful! Especially when you own your own company and work by yourself most of the time.
