We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Justin Emmons. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Justin below.
Alright, Justin thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I picked up my pencil around 10 years ago, after taking a couple decades off. I quickly realized how much I missed my sketchbook. It started out pretty rough and I would be in my head constantly. I kept at it, and would just sketch, doodle and draw whenever I had some time. I’m still in my head at times, but at the end of the day I’m really only doing this for myself. I can’t stop creating!
Justin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always been a fairly creative person. My hands need to be doing something. I was working at a local brewery and had some creative input, but it just wasn’t enough to scratch the itch. So I started doodling in my sketchbook and my iPad pretty much everyday. Most ideas and drawings were pretty bad—but it didn’t stop me. It became almost a form of therapy.
I try to spread a little joy with Pillowy Cloud. The shirts and prints are meant to turn someone’s day around. Colorful bright graphics inspired by growing up in the 90s.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I would love a world without so much gatekeeping. The beer industry was filled with very large egos and I was searching for a better community. I’ve learned the art world is pretty similar, so I just re-focused on myself and my style. Make things for myself that others may also align with.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
Not a fan. It seems they’ve fallen off and that makes me smile.
