We were lucky to catch up with Justin Clark recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin , thanks for joining us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
I was in my 4th year of teaching and I just started at a new school. I was surprised to find out my new school didn’t have a yearbook. I decided to make a digital yearbook from my phone so the students could experience it. I made a promo video and went around to each class playing the video in an attempt to draw interest and secure sales. One of the teachers saw my edit and asked if I could shoot his wedding. At this point I had no professional equipment, but I said yes, and the rest is history!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am a proud husband and dad of 4. I am a full time videographer and I am a full time teacher. My wife and I also own a group travel company. It makes for a busy life , however I have a passion for all of my “jobs”.
With wedding videography I get to create memories for couples that last forever. I can capture that special moment that lives on. It freezes a moment in time that can always be cherished. A wedding is not a movie, there is only one take. So I take special care to make sure all of the details are taken captured and have backup equipment at the ready. I am proud of the growth I have achieved and I continuously look for ways to improve and push the envelope.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As I mentioned I have a lot of full-time jobs. Editing wedding videos requires me to work before school, after school , and even overnight. Editing is a job that you don’t have to clock in or out for and it took some time for me to get disciplined to complete this work in an unstructured work environment (my house).
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I decided to pivot from Panasonic to Sony for camera gear. This is a 4 figure pivot. Not easy to pitch to my wife on why it’s necessary. I migrated and made the move slowly piece by piece and in the end my wife trusts me. She’s always had my back and believed in me and whatever I do, so I’m grateful for her.
