Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to June Van der Walt. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
June, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
For me, doing what I love every day makes my job a success. Life is all about celebrating love in its loudest form—making each person feel seen, heard, and valued. So I truly invest in my clients and connect with couples who aren’t afraid of showing me who they truly are during a shoot together, and want to prioritise how it FELT. It instantly shows emotion in my photography what I think people love and people connect with that.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Firstly, hi! I’m June—a normal person, a storyteller, wife, and mom based in Windhoek, Namibia. I’ve been doing what I love for almost 10 years now, and it’s been an incredible journey.
I’ve been curious about photography since I was small, I’ve always had a camera in hand, playing around with old film cameras and capturing moments long before I knew it would become my career. My professional journey took off in 2016 after shooting my first wedding in South Africa, which a deeper love for capturing moments.
I specialise in wedding and portrait photography. My goal is to capture you as your most genuine self. If you enjoy gut-wrenching belly laughs and cheesy jokes that make your eyes roll I will freeze that moment in time.
As a documentary wedding photographer, my aim is to capture less forced, more authentic moments. I believe in less crisp, more cinematic, less curated, and more candid photography. It’s all about telling your story as raw and beautiful as it is.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. It’s an absolute honor to be a part of such intimate moments in their lives and to create memories they can cherish forever.
My work is 100% inspired by your story, your connection, your love, and how it all comes together. So, if you’re looking for someone to capture those real, heartfelt moments, I’m your person.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was the habit of comparing myself to other photographers. It’s so easy to get lost in a sea of photographers on social media platforms and I started doubting my own work. There was a point in my career where I felt I wasn’t good enough, constantly questioning my skills and creativity.
But here’s the thing: everyone’s journey is unique. Comparing yourself to others can be a never-ending spiral that only leads to self-doubt. I had to learn to focus on myself, my growth, and my passion for creatively telling someone else’s story.
So to get to the point that I realised my clients choose me not because I’m like other photographers, but because I bring something different to the table. My style, my way of connecting with people, and my passion for capturing genuine moments are what set me apart. But most importantly, doing what I love for myself!

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Honestly I post what I want not thinking that much of how my feed looks like, I keep it pretty simple. Consistency is key. Luckily, being a photographer, I rarely run out of content to post, so I try to share something every day.
My advice for those just starting to build their social media presence? Be authentic and consistent. Share content that really resonates with people—those teary grandma moments or the kid stealing wedding cake. It’s the content that evokes emotion that truly connects with your audience.
Don’t overthink it. Share what you love, stay consistent, and engage with your followers. Your passion and authenticity will shine through, and your audience will grow naturally.
