We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Julie Wilson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Julie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I have dedicated my career to collaborating with thought leaders, voiceover actors, and authors, bringing their ideas to life and shaping their stories into impactful audiobooks. Some of my most rewarding experiences have been in the recording studio, working closely with clients to refine their stories. During the pandemic, I felt deeply isolated from the creative process and the personal connection that comes with in-person collaboration. As my corporate career evolved, I found myself increasingly focused on innovation and business growth, which left less time for one-on-one client work—a part of my career I truly missed.
Growing up in New York City with parents who both ran private therapy practices, I learned early on the transformative power of personalized guidance and deep conversations. These experiences planted the seeds for The Articulate Coach, where I’m able to return to the work I’m most passionate about: helping clients step into their potential. I thrive on seeing the immediate and lasting growth my clients achieve through our targeted conversations and assignments, each tailored specifically to their unique goals and needs.

Julie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
At The Articulate Coach, my mission is to help thought leaders, authors, and voiceover actors amplify their unique voices and transform their expertise into impactful brands, businesses, and careers that inspire audiences. Every client’s journey is different, which is one of my favorite aspects of the work I do. Through coaching, courses, and workshops, I guide individuals to align their professional goals with their personal values, crafting meaningful careers that have a positive impact on the world.
Storytelling has always been at the heart of my life. Growing up in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City, I lived in a vibrant community filled with actors, writers, and performers. My dad was a Broadway actor, and my mom, a psychologist, taught me the importance of listening and empathy—skills that have been foundational to my career. After earning an English and Creative Writing degree from Colby College, I spent nearly two decades producing audio stories, collaborating with renowned names like Lin-Manuel Miranda, Alicia Keys, Brandi Carlile, Seth Rogen, and Adam Grant on over 1,500 productions. I’ve also championed diversity in the voiceover industry, especially creating Ahab Talent, a global voiceover casting platform for creatives.
What sets The Articulate Coach apart is our focus on helping clients express their authentic voices and create careers that resonate deeply with their specific audiences. I believe everyone has a story worth telling, and I’m passionate about helping clients turn their lived experiences into platforms that inspire and connect. Whether it’s guiding an author to pitch their book, helping a narrator build their brand, or supporting a thought leader in defining their message, my goal is to help clients leave a lasting impact on the world.
For me, this work isn’t just about achieving professional success—it’s about creating meaningful change and fostering connection through storytelling.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn professional “etiquette.” It may sound funny, but there’s a significant difference between being proper and being professional. Early in my career, I was taught how to act over email, in networking settings, and in the office—but it felt inauthentic. There’s a balancing act when you’re young: you feel the need to prove yourself to higher-ups, but often at the expense of who you truly are. As I’ve grown in my career and business, I’ve realized that what clients and colleagues value most is my authentic voice and genuine insights. Those qualities are honed over time and through experience. It’s why I built The Articulate Coach on the pillars of claiming your voice, sharing your story, and owning your expertise.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I’ve been fortunate with how organically my client base and subscribers have grown. Many were drawn to The Articulate Coach through my past career milestones and public-facing opportunities, which gave me a strong foundation when I opened my doors as a coach. One of the first goals I set for my clients is to choose their primary communication channel—whether it’s a social media platform, in-person presentations, a podcast, or a newsletter. It will likely be a combination of these, tailored to how you best express yourself and your ideas.
Early on, I realized the importance of building a marketing funnel that guides prospective clients to my free VIP List newsletter. I wanted to own my audience rather than rely solely on social media platforms that can change overnight based on someone else’s business goals. Through my VIP List, I can regularly educate and inspire subscribers while ensuring they’re making progress toward their goals. It also provides a destination to direct people from all of my public-facing engagements, both online and in person.
However, before creating a newsletter or any engagement channel, you need to hone your core message. I’ve learned that your core message and mission statement will evolve over time—and that’s okay. Your business is a living, breathing entity that grows with you. Start by defining your mission statement, brand values, and voice. Then, launch your engagement channel. It may not be perfect at first, but over time, you’ll refine it into something that’s truly authentic to you and your business.
