Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Julie Margi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Julie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
Starting my own practice was inspired by my passion for beauty and the entrepreneurial example I saw in my family from an early age. Growing up around family members who worked for themselves in the watch industry taught me the value of independence, discipline, and building something meaningful.
My advice to young professionals is to think through every angle, be strategic, and always put yourself in the clients shoes. A beautiful business is not only about the service you provide, but how people feel before, during, and after the experience. Communication and transparency are of utmost importance, as well.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a licensed esthetician and makeup artist with nearly two decades of experience in the beauty industry. I began my career in 2007 and have always been drawn to the confidence and transformation that beauty services can bring to people; not just physically, but emotionally also. This is why my tagline is what it is: Step into your best self.
Alongside my hands on experience in the industry, I pursued a college education in business and marketing, which helped me better understand branding, customer experience, and the operational side of building a successful business. Over the years, I’ve worked in both spa and freelance environments, allowing me to develop an approach that blends luxury service, artistry, and personalized care.
Today, I operate Julie Rae Margi Beauty & Makeup Artistry, where I specialize in customized facials, and full body waxing, makeup artistry for weddings and special events, lash lifts, and eyebrow services. My focus is creating results that feel polished, elevated, and hand crafted to each individual while still enhancing their natural features. I work with a wide range of clientele and skin types, including those dealing with concerns such as sensitivity, acne, dehydration, hyperpigmentation, and aging skin.
What sets me apart is that I truly value the experience just as much as the result. I want clients to feel comfortable, heard, and genuinely cared for from the moment they walk in. Whether someone is preparing for a wedding, coming in for a facial, or simply wanting to feel more confident in their skin, my goal is to create an experience that leaves them feeling great both inside and out.
One of the things I am most proud of is building long term trust and relationships with my clients. Many of them have followed me throughout different stages of my career, which means a great deal to me. I’m also proud of opening my own private practice and creating a space that reflects both professionalism and warmth.
The biggest thing I want people to know about my brand is that it is rooted in authenticity, intention, and genuine care. Beauty is personal, and I never want clients to feel like just another appointment on the books. There is no one size fits all procedure and everything is customized to each individual. I believe confidence comes from feeling cared for, understood, and comfortable in your own skin, and that is the experience I strive to provide every day.
Have you ever had to pivot?
One of the biggest pivots in my career was transitioning from helping build a spa business to creating a space and brand of my own and solo. After many years in the beauty and wellness industry, I realized I wanted to create an experience that fully reflected my standards, creativity, and values.
This transition taught me a lot about discernment, boundaries, and trusting my instincts. I learned that not every opportunity or partnership is the right fit, and that it’s important to be thoughtful about who you build with and the environment you create around yourself.
It also strengthened my faith and reminded me how important prayer and reflection are when making major life or career decisions. That pivot helped me become more intentional, strategic, and confident in both business and in myself.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Other than technical training and knowledge, I believe emotional intelligence, consistency, and genuine care for people are some of the most important qualities for succeeding in this field. Clients will always remember how you made them feel. Having their best interest at heart, being transparent, and creating a welcoming, professional experience goes a long way in building trust and long-term relationships.
I also think being observant and strategic matters. Success in the beauty and wellness industry is not only about artistry, but about communication, professionalism, adaptability, and customer experience. Trends and techniques are always evolving, so staying open to learning and growing is essential.
There is an ongoing joke that you can show up however you want, but in many ways, you are your brand and a personal billboard. That does not mean perfection, but it does mean taking pride in how you present yourself, your energy, and your work. People notice professionalism, being on time, self-care, and attention to detail, and those things help create confidence and credibility in this industry.
