We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jules Fleming. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jules below.
Alright, Jules thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Yes, I am a full-time makeup artist and hairstylist, and I’m proud to say that I’ve built a sustainable career in this field. I work across a variety of areas—bridal, editorial photography, lifestyle, production, special FX, and more—allowing me to bring creative expertise wherever hair and makeup services are needed.
My journey wasn’t instant; it’s taken years of dedication and growth to reach this point. It all began with cosmetology school while I balanced jobs in the restaurant industry to support myself. Along the way, I worked with several cosmetic brands in roles focused on product education and training, which honed my skills and broadened my industry knowledge.
A major milestone for me has been the ability to create looks I’m genuinely passionate about. This creative freedom not only sharpened my skills but also kept me inspired. One of the most valuable steps in my journey has been connecting with other talented artists, photographers, planners, and professionals in the field. Collaboration is key—it pushes creativity, expands your network, and opens doors to exciting projects and lasting relationships.
If there’s one piece of advice I’d give, it’s to actively seek out and foster these relationships. The beauty industry thrives on collaboration, and every connection brings something new and enriching to your career.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello! I’m Jules Fleming, a lifelong artist with a passion for creating beauty through hair and makeup. From an early age, I was drawn to the creative arts, and as I explored different avenues, I discovered a talent for bringing out people’s best through beauty. This led me to pursue formal training in cosmetology, where I built a strong foundation in both the art and science of beauty. Over the years, I deepened my expertise by working with cosmetic brands in product knowledge and education roles, and by collaborating with top-tier teams across the industry.
After honing my craft and gaining invaluable experience, I decided to start my own company, Jules Fleming Artistry, which is now a team of highly skilled artists specializing in luxury beauty services. We work across Chicago, South Florida, and Central Florida, bringing our services to weddings, special events, galas, editorial shoots, and more. What sets us apart is our dedication to offering a true luxury experience that’s both convenient and meticulous. We use only the highest quality products, ensuring each client looks and feels exceptional from start to finish.
The value we bring to clients lies not only in our technical skills but in the care and attention we devote to every aspect of their experience. Our goal is to make sure every client feels celebrated, confident, and completely taken care of throughout their journey with us. At Jules Fleming Artistry, it’s not just about beauty; it’s about creating memorable, personalized experiences that elevate any occasion.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of being an artist is the ability to make people feel genuinely beautiful and confident. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about witnessing that moment when a client looks in the mirror and truly sees themselves as radiant. My work is all about capturing the essence of someone’s unique beauty, and I love that each client and each look is a new canvas and a fresh opportunity for creative expression.
Being able to blend my technical skills with creativity also keeps the work exciting and inspiring. I’m always pushing myself and my team to innovate and explore new styles, and there’s nothing quite like the satisfaction of bringing a client’s vision—or a creative idea—to life. It’s truly an honor to be part of people’s milestone moments, whether it’s a wedding, gala, or editorial shoot, and it’s these connections and memories that make my work as an artist so deeply rewarding.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
One thing non-creatives might find challenging to understand is that being an artist requires just as much discipline and resilience as it does creativity. Many people see the end product—a beautiful hairstyle, flawless makeup, or a perfectly styled shoot—and assume it was effortless. But the reality is, behind every look or image, there are countless hours of practice, continuous learning, and often a lot of trial and error.
The journey of a creative is rarely a straight line. It’s full of challenges—whether it’s building a clientele, staying inspired, or finding ways to differentiate yourself in a competitive industry. There’s also an emotional investment; as artists, we put our hearts into our work. Sometimes, this means learning to accept criticism and grow from it without letting it take away the joy of creating.
Another aspect that can be difficult to convey is the amount of personal energy and connection that goes into each client experience. The creative process isn’t something that can just be clocked in and out of; it’s a part of who we are. But that’s also what makes it so fulfilling! Every client, project, and look is an opportunity to bring something unique into the world, and it’s this drive to create and connect that makes the journey so meaningful, despite the challenges. For those who feel drawn to a creative path, I’d say embrace the ups and downs—they’re all part of building something truly worthwhile.
