We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jules. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jules below.
Jules, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
One risk I took was moving to a city after living in a really small town for most of my life. It was a huge change for me, but I feel like I’ve finally gotten the hang of it, especially living downtown. It took some time to adjust to all the differences, but living here has opened up opportunities that I never would have had if I had stayed in a small town my whole life. To some, it might not seem like a risk, but for me it definitely was. It was a big step that pushed me out of my comfort zone and challenged me in ways I hadn’t experienced before.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, I’m Jules! I’m based in Cincinnati, Ohio, and love sharing the best of the city, from the local sports scene to restaurant recommendations and events happening in and around the Cincinnati area. I started creating content consistently on TikTok in 2020 and now post across TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram as @notsocooljules. Content creation is a passion of mine outside of my full-time role as a Digital Content Coordinator for a national brand. Yes, my full-time job also happens to involve managing social media for a brand. Let’s just say, it is a huge part of my life.
Growing up in a small town, Spencerville, Ohio (population around 2,200), was a very different experience from living in a city like Cincinnati. My graduating class had only about 65 students, which is pretty unheard of compared to most schools in the Cincinnati area. And yes, I’ve been asked the classic Cincinnati question countless times: “Where did you go to school?” I usually have to explain that I’m not originally from here and that the school I went to is one most people in Cincinnati have never heard of. Yet, they still want to know anyway.
Long before I moved to Cincinnati in 2022, I used to visit the city a few times a year with my family to go to Reds games. Every time we drove back home on I-75, I would stare at the skyline in awe. I always thought the skyscrapers were the coolest thing ever, and I’d imagine what it would be like to live in the city one day. Fast forward many years later, and now I’m lucky enough to be living the dream that younger me always imagined.
Moving to a city I had always dreamed of living in pushed me outside of my comfort zone in the best way. Growing up, I was quiet and definitely a people pleaser, and often found myself trying to fit in. Sharing my life and creating content has helped me come out of that shell, and I definitely never would have imagined that one day I’d be putting parts of my life on social media the way I do now.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gained more confidence in myself and in my ability to create content. Although I’m still more on the quiet side, I’ve come a long way both personally and creatively. Creating content has been a big part of that journey, and I’m proud of myself for taking that step.
In the beginning, one of the hardest parts was worrying too much about what others thought. It was also challenging to ignore the negative comments and messages from strangers that started coming in as I posted more. Over time, I’ve learned to remind myself that the people leaving those comments online would likely never say the same things to someone in person. While it has definitely become easier to stay authentic and not focus on outside opinions, there are still times when I get in my own head. When that happens, I’ve learned that taking a short break from posting helps me reset and come back feeling more confident and creative.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Honestly, the most rewarding part of creating content has been the people I’ve met along the way. Many of my friends came into my life through social media because we share the same sports teams and hobbies. Without social media, I never would have met so many incredible people, both online and in real life, and that connection has been the greatest reward of all. We bonded over our shared love of sports and other interests, and I’ve been lucky to stay friends with many of these people for years.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn the idea that every negative comment or message requires a reaction. I realized that I don’t need to defend myself to people who have already made up their minds about me, and that almost none of these strangers actually know me in real life. I value the opinions of my friends and family far more than those of people online. Most of the time, hateful comments are just someone seeking attention. Protecting my peace and not wasting energy on people who don’t deserve it has been one of the most important lessons I have learned.
