We were lucky to catch up with Josiah & Meg Mothershed recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Josiah & Meg, thanks for joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Yes! We’ve been able to make a full-time living from our creative work, but it definitely didn’t happen overnight. Josiah took the leap in 2016, quitting his full-time design job to freelance full-time—it felt like jumping off a cliff, but worth it to build a dream. About a year and a half later, Meg joined full-time, leaving her in-house role to dive in with both feet.
It’s been a decade of hard work, trial and error, late nights, and figuring out what actually works. We planned carefully, moved cautiously, and learned as we went—but sometimes, you just have to go for it. Now, stepping into our 10th year, it’s wild to look back and see how far persistence, creativity, and a little bit of bravery can take you.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We’re a husband-and-wife team—a true dynamic duo—specializing in branding and web design for small businesses across Colorado and the U.S. We work exclusively with small, service-based businesses, providing hands-on, custom website design, brand identity, and digital marketing solutions. What sets us apart? When you work with us, you work directly with us—no outside developers or whitelabeled contractors. Our small, dedicated team truly understands what it takes to build, market, and grow a small business online.
We love helping small business owners make an impact by creating memorable first impressions, designing custom websites, and building brand identities that authentically reflect who they are. As a small business ourselves, we understand the challenges and opportunities of running a business, and that perspective informs everything we do. For us, it’s not just design—it’s helping small businesses succeed with strategic, authentic, and visually compelling branding and web solutions.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Yes! Josiah and Meg met in 2013 in Denver—online, of course, because the best love stories often start with a little digital serendipity. The funny part? We realized we lived literally across the street from each other on Poet’s Row in Capitol Hill and had somehow never crossed paths before. Fate (and Wi-Fi) finally brought us together.
We got married in 2016, and just a month later, we dove headfirst into starting Mothershed Design. A little love, a little adventure, and a lot of creative ambition—it’s been a wild and wonderful ride ever since!

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele? Being real people. We show up as humans—relatable, flexible, and understanding—because small business owners want to work with people they can trust, not faceless agencies. Building genuine relationships, listening closely, and adapting to each client’s needs has been the key to our growth.
