We recently connected with Joseph Field and have shared our conversation below.
Joseph, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
A hugely defining moment for me was winning First Place in Facial Massage at The Skin Games International Skincare and Massage Competition in March 2024. The new massage categories were announced and when I heard of the facial massage category, I knew I had to be a part of this revolutionary event. I took a rewarding risk and flew to Atlanta, GA from Oregon with my mom. This win was very important for me for many reasons.
1) Participating in this event created so many valuable networking connections. I have been able to connect with so many like-minded spa professionals looking to hone in their craft. It has also inspired and guided me into creating my business, Joe Glow. It’s true when you hear that you become the people that you’re closest to. Choose to surround yourself with people you want to be like.
2) Obviously winning this category at the competition was an incredible feeling, but it also gave me the confidence and desire to share what I’ve learned about facial massage with other estheticians and massage therapists. There are so many powerful benefits of facial massage which is quickly increasing in popularity. Being a part of an industry based on human connection is truly such a huge blessing, and getting to help others create those type of connections with other humans is all I could ever ask for.
My lesson/wisdom from this experience is to find your niche. Whatever industry you work in, find your passion and everything else will fall into place. Since winning at TSG in March 2024, I have had five sold out facial massage classes in Portland, OR; Salt Lake City, UT; Phoenix, AZ (2); and Tucson, AZ. So far I have three classes planned for 2025: my first one in Southern California, a FULL DAY training in Portland, OR, and my annual class at MECA in Phoenix in April.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Being a massage therapist was always something I considered in middle and high school. A year after high school graduation and feeling defeated from life, I took action to better my life and enrolled in massage therapy school. This was an incredibly transformative time for me. I learned so much about the human body with a close knit group of students that I got to call my friends. On top of this, it was the beginning of my professional identity of myself.
I had never even heard of an esthetician until I was in massage school. I immediately felt so gravitated to it. Skincare and massage therapy tremendously compliment each other and what an awesome way to create human connection and care for others. So, I enrolled in esthetics school right after graduating from massage school and that’s where I started to fall in love with skincare and facial massage. It was a great advantage for me to already be working as an LMT while I was in esthetics school. Graduating from the 1200 hour Master Esthetics Course at Paul Mitchell the School Salt Lake City also gave me lots of opportunity to practice facials and facial massage in a supervised setting. I was a dual-licensed therapist by the age of 21.
After a few years of working in a day spa in Park City, UT, COVID came and really shook things up for all of us. With all the uncertainty in the world I decided to step away from the spa industry to have some outdoor adventures. This led to a few years of nomadism in my life, mostly involving farm and hostel work trade, as well as working part-time at local spas. While in North Carolina working on an equine retirement farm, I had the incredible pleasure of connecting with Moto Kinjo, the creator and director of MECA (Men’s Esthetician Conference and Associates). He invited me to teach a facial massage class at the upcoming conference in May 2023 in Phoenix. It literally felt like a dream come true! This conference is very important to me as it has been an incredibly uplifting and educational experience for me. The first day is a conference with speakers from all over the country. The second day is an educational event, with last year offering over 30 unique classes. This event highlights male estheticians and connects and empowers all of us (all genders). I highly recommend for any esthetician to get involved with MECA.
The most important tip I share with others is to remember that everything is about human connection. Be present.
After winning The Skin Games, I have been hosting in-person facial massage classes in Oregon, Utah, and Arizona. It is truly such an honor to get to travel across the country sharing my passion with other amazing spa professionals. On top of classes, I’m thrilled to share the opening of Joe Glow in Brownsville, Oregon where I offer massage therapy and my Signature Joe Glow Facial: a 60 minute deluxe enzyme facial treatment including my International Award Winning Facial Massage. Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Networking is extremely crucial for succeeding in the esthetics industry. Connecting with business owners has absolutely been the most inspiring tool for growing my own business. Learning from others experience and surrounding yourself with people that inspire you is going to effectively shape you into your best self.

How’d you meet your business partner?
Although Moto isn’t my “business partner,” I do credit a lot of my success to him. He gave me the first opportunity to teach about facial massage and has helped me create so many valuable relationships in the spa industry.
One day in 2022 I had a random urge to search “male estheticians” on Instagram. A page popped up called MECAPHX. Moto had just completed the first year of the MECA (Men’s Esthetician Conference and Associates) Conference. What?! I knew I had to get involved in this amazing organization. His resilience and dedication to this event is unmatched. So again, I urge you to network, network, NETWORK! Use that search bar on Instagram and Google, sign up for that event/class, and send that text/email/DM!
