We recently connected with Joseph Cornelison and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Joseph thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started out making backyard films, very DIY, doing everything myself – writing, filming, editing. Through that process, I learned a great deal about resourcefulness and keeping the scope of projects within an achievable reality. Being tuned into the reality of your resources can be a filmmaker’s greatest strength.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always been passionate about creating worlds to tell stories. Because I came up through the doing it yourself approach, it’s always been about creating worlds through whatever resources were, more or less, immediately available to me. I was able to take this approach to a whole new personal level with my recent film “Wulver’s Stane” – a contemporary reimagining of ancient Werewolf mythology. We shot it over several years in Austin, Texas. Through focusing on expressionistic wardrobe, potent locations, and sound design, we were able to create a heightened world on a limited budget.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Collaboration. Nothing beats creating with others who are on the same frequency. It really is the stuff. When creating a film, the goal is for all the elements to be in total sync – for the wardrobe to be reflecting the sound design, for the cinematography to be in lock step with the music. On my latest film “Wulver’s Stane,” I was lucky enough to work with a host talented artists. Bringing the world of the film to life with this crew was an incredible fever dream.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The goal will always be to make totally blissed-out, beautiful films with great people.
