We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Joseph Coraggio a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Joseph, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I’ve always been extremely into music from a very young age. My Dad showed me lots of different songs/artists growing up, and he noticed I had a good ear for it and that I would pick up on things very quickly — so he ended up getting me started with Piano lessons when I was about 10 years old, and that continued throughout my teens. This led to me being able to play tons of different songs I enjoyed, but it also got me started in writing some of my own songs as well. Writing was the part that was super exciting for me because you can really let your creativity come through. From there I just had to figure out the technical side of music production, get all the software/instruments I needed, then start to learn. From a production standpoint I learned mostly from various tutorials on the internet & through trial and error — it took a while for me to be able to consistently produce professional sounding tracks from the production side, but luckily for me I already had the music/writing side of things down, which allowed me to progress much quicker than someone who would need to learn both from scratch.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Joey, but I go by the artist name JAYCiX. I’m 28 years old & originally from Scottsdale AZ, but recently moved to Miami FL to get myself involved in a bigger music network/market. My music style is predominantly House, but I tend to lean towards a pop/commercial type of House music because I really enjoy the musical/melodic elements that sometimes gets lost/overlooked in more minimal subgenres of House music. I wouldn’t say there’s a specific “message” I try to get across in my songs, since some of them are happy, some are more mellow, and then everything in between. – but my main goal is just to create great pieces of music with great melodies that people can enjoy & groove with. I’m definitely proud of how fast I have grown/progressed as an Artist & just as a musician in general, but there’s also still a long way to go for me to be as successful as I truly want to be.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a music artist is being able to create something that people can truly enjoy, relate to, and in some cases it can even make their day better if it can help put them in a positive mood. — it’s also a great feeling when people reach out either on Instagram or wherever else to tell me about specific songs or lyrics they really resonate with — that type of thing shows that people are really appreciating what you’re working so hard on.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Nothing numerical or overly specific, but my main mission is just to leave a lasting positive impression on people. Whether thats the whole world or just a small number or people is still yet to be seen, but I think it’s the coolest thing ever when people still respect and appreciate songs (or any other type of creation) years or even decades later. So hopefully I can achieve that on at least a decent sized scale.
