We were lucky to catch up with Joseph Bellamy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Joseph thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you’ve thought about whether to sign with an agent or manager?
In 2022, I embarked on my modeling journey and secured representation from two agencies: my local agency, Modelscout in Orlando, and MMG in New York. Each model’s path to signing is uniquely different, and mine is no exception. Prior to joining my first agency, I participated in a photoshoot that marked my debut in the industry. Although I felt quite anxious, the results exceeded my expectations. With those images in hand, I began submitting them to various agencies.
For Modelscout, I took the initiative to apply through their website, which led to an invitation for an open casting call. After several meetings and another photoshoot, I was officially signed. My approach with MMG was less conventional; I directly contacted their talent manager and creative director, Jordan Molloy, via email. She requested my measurements and additional photos, and after a week of correspondence, I received confirmation of my signing.
I chose to partner with both agencies because I believed they were the right fit for me at that time—and I still feel the same way. Their strong connections within the industry and commitment to nurturing my potential as a model gave me confidence that they could significantly advance my career.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I spent 22 years growing up in Maryland, where the dream of becoming a model always lingered in the back of my mind. However, I found it difficult to envision a realistic path to modeling in Maryland, and I often doubted my appearance. Before relocating, I had around 4,000 followers on Instagram, but my page was essentially blank since I had deleted all prior content and only posted on my stories.
Before my move, my older brother, Benjamin Bellamy, encouraged me to re-launch my Instagram presence. I expressed my reluctance, stating that if I were to do it, I wanted to do it right. Being a perfectionist is something my family knows all too well. Benjamin assured me that I would figure it out.
In October 2021, I moved to Florida, and within a week, I re-launched my Instagram with an eye-catching selfie and the caption “New era!” From that moment, things began to accelerate. I started planning my posts more meticulously and took the time to explore my new city, Orlando.
In January 2022, while enjoying a night out with a friend, we snapped some photos after parking. A few days later, feeling a bit adventurous, I decided to submit those pictures to various modeling agencies. To my surprise, I received a response from a talent development agency requesting a test shoot just outside Miami. I consulted my older brother, who encouraged me to seize the opportunity.
Before I knew it, I was driving to the test shoot. After the session, I spoke with the agency experts, who suggested that I pursue modeling professionally and expressed confidence in my potential. Over the next couple of months, I submitted my photos to numerous agencies both locally and beyond. One of the first responses came from MMG New York, and after a week of discussions, I was signed in August 2022.
A few months later, I heard back from my current local agency, Modelscout. We conducted a photoshoot later that year, and by January 2023, I was officially signed with them. Since then, I have been diligently updating my portfolio, traveling to New York, and attending some of the largest modeling conventions worldwide. I’ve had the opportunity to converse with many leading modeling agencies, walk in a fashion show for an acclaimed designer featured in Vogue, star in music videos with prominent artists, and grace the cover of a local magazine. And the journey continues.
As a model, I have the privilege of being booked by clients for a variety of projects, including photoshoots, fashion shows, music videos, commercials, and more—essentially whatever their needs may be. One of my proudest achievements is overcoming my initial doubts about making it in the industry. By persevering and pushing through challenges, I have seen the benefits manifest in numerous ways.
What sets me apart from other models is simply being myself. Throughout my journey, I have encountered many stunning models, yet I have yet to find anyone who resembles me. This uniqueness is something I embrace, as it allows me to bring a distinct presence to every project I undertake.
What truly matters to me in my modeling career is not the financial gain or the pursuit of fame, but rather the artistry behind modeling and fashion. The ability to express oneself through this beautiful art form, which resonates with so many, is what I cherish the most. My passion for modeling has been a constant since childhood, and it will remain a lifelong love.
Modeling has afforded me incredible experiences, such as traveling to New York and exploring one of the world’s most iconic cities. One of my favorite moments was bringing my brother, David Bellamy, along on one of my trips. Together, we explored the city and created lasting memories, with him getting a front-row seat to my life as a model.
Throughout this journey, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many remarkable individuals in the industry, some of whom have become lifelong friends, like my boy Willo Kelly, whom I hold in high regard. It’s moments like these that reinforce the belief that all my efforts have been worthwhile.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Many people outside the modeling industry often perceive it as shallow, self-centered, or even cutthroat, viewing some models as entitled or assuming that success comes easily to them. However, the reality is quite the opposite. Although modeling is not my full-time profession, it often feels like one.
There’s a significant amount of behind-the-scenes work involved, from regularly updating my portfolio to styling myself for photoshoots, as hiring a stylist can be prohibitively expensive. I also participate in showcases to present myself to agencies in hopes of landing better contracts.
Maintaining our appearance requires considerable effort as well. We need to schedule regular haircuts, facials, and nail appointments, while also committing to workout routines to stay fit. Additionally, we have to be mindful of our diets. This combination of responsibilities can be overwhelming and can take a toll on a model’s mental health.
Personally, I’ve been fortunate to maintain a balanced mental state, but many others struggle with these pressures. It’s important to recognize that modeling is not as straightforward as it may seem; for most models, it is a side hustle that involves juggling these demands alongside their primary jobs.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I wouldn’t attribute my insights and approach to any specific books, videos, or essays. Instead, I’ve gathered valuable advice from a variety of sources. Engaging with this industry requires thorough research, and I took that to heart.
I started by searching for YouTube videos focused on male modeling, immersing myself in countless fashion shows to study the nuances of the business. I examined every detail, from models’ hairstyles to their skin care. By following models on Instagram, I gained insight into how they curate their pages and navigate their daily lives, which inspired me to implement similar strategies in my own life.
Additionally, I followed leading fashion publications and designers across Instagram and other platforms, conducting a deep dive into the profession. This comprehensive approach has been instrumental in my journey, and I believe it can offer valuable guidance to others aspiring to enter the industry.
