We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jose. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jose below.
Jose, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
One of the biggest risks I’ve taken wasn’t just one moment. It was a decision I kept making over and over again: choosing to be myself, even when it meant being the outcast. Growing up, I was always the “weird one.” I was into things people around me didn’t really understand, experimenting with fashion, getting into film, taking photos, trying to create something out of nothing. While everyone else kind of fit into a box, I didn’t. And people noticed. I’d hear comments, people talking behind my back, questioning why I dressed a certain way or why I cared so much about creative stuff. But I never let that stop me. At home, it was a different kind of challenge. I grew up in a strict Hispanic household where being creative wasn’t seen as a real career. It was more like a hobby, something you do on the side, not something you build your life around. My parents would say they supported me, but in reality, there were moments when they held me back. They didn’t understand why I was spending money on equipment or traveling far, sometimes late at night, just to shoot or create. To them, it didn’t make sense. I get it, they were looking out for me. They wanted stability, something safe. But for me, this wasn’t just a phase. It was something deeper. It was my passion. At first, they didn’t take me seriously. But over time, as I stayed consistent and kept building my craft, they started to see that I wasn’t just playing around. It hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth it. I’m still growing, still figuring things out, but I’ve learned to trust myself. And more than anything, I want to make an impact on other Hispanic creatives like me. People who were told this path isn’t possible, or that it’s “weird” to chase something creative. I want to show them that it is possible, and that being different isn’t something to hide, it’s something to build on.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
For people who don’t know me, I’d say I’m just someone who’s always been curious and drawn to anything creative. Growing up, I was into a mix of stuff that kind of shaped my taste. I liked the color black, tattoos, piercings, rage music, all that energy. I looked up to people like Jeff Hardy, Criss Angel, Michael Jackson, and even things like Guitar Hero and Skrillex. It was all different, but it all had this bold, expressive feel that stuck with me. Fashion was really the first thing that caught my attention heavily. Seeing how Michael Jackson carried himself and dressed, that’s when it clicked for me. From there, I just kept experimenting. I never wanted to stay in one lane; I liked trying different art forms and styles, just figuring out what felt right. I got my first camera in 2017, and that changed everything. Once I started filming and taking photos, I never really put it down. I fell in love with the idea that you can capture a moment and keep it forever, and also shape how that moment feels through editing and styling. That’s what really pulled me in. Right now, I focus on creative direction, filming, and editing videos. Photography is more personal for me at the moment; it’s something I use to experiment and really dial in my style, but I do plan on doing more freelance work with it as I grow. What I think sets me apart is just how personal everything is to me. I’m not creating just to create; there’s intention behind it. I’ve been through my own struggles, doubts, and sacrifices trying to chase this path, so when I work, I bring all of that with me. It’s real to me. What I’m most proud of is that I didn’t quit. Even when people didn’t understand it, even when it didn’t make sense financially or socially, I stayed with it. I kept building. If there’s one thing I want people to know about me, it’s that I’m dedicated for real. I believe dreams are possible, but they come with struggle, pain, and sacrifice; that’s just part of it. And through all of that, my faith has kept me grounded. I wouldn’t have made it through certain moments without God. Everything I create is bigger than me. I do it to honor Him and to stay true to what I believe in.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part for me is seeing my ideas actually come to life. Like, something that was once just in my head. A random thought, a vision, a feeling, turning into something real that I can show to the world. It’s kind of crazy when you think about it. You start with nothing, just imagination, and then through time, effort, and creativity, it becomes something you can see, hear, or experience. Being able to share that with people and have them connect to it in their own way is what makes it all worth it.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Music and movies really shape the way I think and how I see life. I feel like everything in art is connected: fashion, music, film. It all feeds into each other. Fashion influences music, music influences movies, and movies circle back and influence how you move and express yourself. It all just blends in a way that feels natural.
Watching different kinds of films has pushed me to think deeper and move differently in life. Movies like Fight Club, Interstellar, The Passion of the Christ, and Under the Same Moon all hit me in different ways. Some make you question yourself, some make you think bigger, and others remind you of real struggles and emotions. That kind of impact sticks with me and shows up in how I create and how I see the world.
