We recently connected with Jonathon Ferguson and have shared our conversation below.
Jonathon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
As an artist and creative director, my mission is to break down barriers and challenge the status quo in spaces traditionally dominated by my non-black counterparts. I believe that diversity and representation are essential to the advancement of creativity and I am committed to amplifying the voices of those who have been marginalized for too long.
Self-identity is very important to me. I never wanted to look or act like my other peers; but I also didn’t want to stand out. There’s a fine line in being yourself and I always make sure my products are quality. I’m very proud of the connections I’ve made over the years, friendship and allyship is important to me when building community. My team and I help each other daily to reach our goals and inspire one another.
Jonathon, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hey everyone,
My name is Jonathon Ferguson, ferg.JP creatively. I’m an artist / creative director hailing from the DMV area. My discipline is in marketing and learning trends across countless different industries. My creative work provides spaces for people to express themselves. Music, fashion, arts + events are mostly my focus as of late and each thing brings me great joy. I love music, its the canvas to our lives – I’m working on my new album right now that will tell my sonic journey and I am doing my creative to visually tell that tale. I have two brands – one is my event company ‘White Durag’ and the other is my home decor line called ‘Thanks For Sleeping’. Both are apart of me just as much as my music; they all play a role.

White Durag brings people together, like a home – while Thanks For Sleeping fills that home. Its a unique synergy and the backdrop is my music.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
As cliche as it sounds the (my) mission is to create, simply that. We do the things we do because they help us connect with others and evoke emotions. If what you created did that GREAT, if it made you money that’s even better.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One thing I had to unlearn was that everyone doesn’t have your best interest at heart. In business you meet a lot of people. Those people normally are fans of you and want the work that you do for yourself for them. I had a bunch of those and I had to un-learn that not all the people I interact with will have my best interests at heart. Collaboration is a two way street and people sometimes forget that.
