Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jonathan Williams. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jonathan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk I’ve taken was pivoting my entire business model during a time when stability felt essential. I originally founded Diamond State Dent Removal LLC, focusing on paintless dent repair for dings, door dings, and dealership work—steady, predictable jobs that kept the lights on. It was comfortable, but I saw a bigger opportunity in specializing exclusively in hail damage repair. Hail storms can devastate vehicles in minutes, creating a surge in demand for skilled repair work, but it’s also highly seasonal, weather-dependent, and competitive. Specializing meant walking away from the broader, more reliable dent removal and dealership contracts that provided consistent cash flow.
The uncertainty was massive. I was essentially betting the business on something niche—rebranding to Diamond State Hail Solutions, investing in specialized tools and training for hail-specific techniques (like accessing tight creases and blended damage from large hail), and shifting our marketing and operations to chase storm events rather than local shop work. There was no safety net; if the pivot failed, we could lose years of built relationships and momentum.
Then COVID hit, amplifying every risk. The world shut down, auto dealerships slowed dramatically, insurance claims stalled, and storms didn’t care about pandemics—yet we had no formal plans, no PPP loans (or we navigated without relying on them), and no outside assistance to fall back on. It was pure grit: adapting on the fly, managing cash flow tightly, keeping the team motivated, and pushing through months of uncertainty. Many in the industry struggled or closed; we refused to.
Why take the risk? I believed in the long-term potential. Hail damage repair isn’t just bodywork—it’s precision craftsmanship under pressure, and specializing would allow us to become the go-to experts in our region (and beyond). The broader dent market was crowded; owning a niche could set us apart and scale faster when conditions aligned.
We made it through the worst of COVID stronger than before. By doubling down on hail expertise, we positioned ourselves perfectly for the rebound and subsequent storm seasons. We’ve doubled our annual income year over year since the pivot—growth that wouldn’t have been possible staying generalists. The risk taught me that calculated leaps, backed by persistence and adaptability, can transform a business. Uncertainty is part of the game, but perseverance through the hard seasons builds something lasting.
Trust your gut when you see a real opportunity, but back it with preparation and relentless execution. Risks feel overwhelming in the moment, especially during crises like COVID, but surviving them without shortcuts builds unbreakable resilience. Don’t wait for perfect conditions—take the leap, adjust as you go, and keep showing up.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi, I’m Jonathan, 36 years old, founder and owner of Diamond State Hail Solutions. I’m a dedicated family man—married to my incredible wife of 12 years, dad to three wonderful kids—and we make our home base in Conway, Arkansas. But when hail season ramps up, my work takes me across the US, chasing storms to help people get their vehicles back to perfect.
My entry into this world came thanks to my father-in-law, who’s been in paintless dent repair (PDR) and hail damage restoration for 35 years. About 10 years ago, he saw my interest in hands-on craftsmanship and problem-solving and brought me into the trade. He mentored me through the precision techniques of PDR—gently massaging dents out from behind panels without ever touching the factory paint. It was eye-opening work: quick, clean fixes for dings and dents that kept vehicles looking original. After a couple of years learning the ropes, I specialized in hail damage, which hits hard and fast in places like Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and beyond—often covering cars in hundreds or thousands of dents overnight.
Eight years ago, I took the full leap to own my own business, pivoting from general dent removal and dealership work to Diamond State Hail Solutions—exclusively focused on hail repair. My father-in-law and I now travel as a tag-team duo: his decades of experience combined with my energy and modern techniques make us a powerhouse team. We load up specialized tools and head to storm-hit areas nationwide, deploying fast to assess and repair damage on-site.
What we provide is expert, mobile paintless dent repair for hail damage. We handle everything from light “pea-sized” hail to severe golf-ball impacts that create creases and blended clusters. Using precision PDR tools, we push dents out from the inside, restoring smooth, factory-fresh panels without fillers, sanding, or repainting. This saves clients thousands over traditional body shop work, gets vehicles back on the road in days (not weeks), preserves resale value and factory warranties, and is eco-friendly with zero paint waste or chemicals. We also manage the full process: free on-site inspections, detailed damage documentation, direct insurance claim support (working seamlessly with adjusters), and lifetime warranties on our repairs. We serve individual owners, dealerships, fleets, and shops that refer hail jobs our way.
What sets us apart is our deep specialization, mobility, and family legacy. We’re not general PDR techs dabbling in hail—we live it, with my father-in-law’s 35 years guiding every job and my 10 years adding fresh expertise. Traveling as a tag team means double the hands, faster turnarounds, and unmatched attention to tough patterns like hidden creases or high-volume clusters. We’re insurance-approved, communicate honestly (no hidden fees, clear expectations), and treat every vehicle like family—because that’s how we run our business.
I’m most proud of this partnership and the resilience we’ve built together. Surviving COVID’s uncertainty—no plans, no outside help—then doubling our annual income year over year since the pivot is huge. But the real fulfillment comes from transforming storm-damaged cars: watching a client’s relief when their ride looks untouched again, saving them money and hassle during recovery. Teaming up with my father-in-law has turned a skill into a family legacy, and helping people nationwide feels incredibly rewarding.
The main things I want potential clients, followers, and fans to know about Diamond State Hail Solutions:
We’re true hail specialists—our entire operation, backed by 45 combined years of experience (my father-in-law’s 35 + my 10), is dedicated to flawless PDR results for storm damage.
PDR is the superior choice: faster, more affordable, greener, and it keeps your original paint, value, and warranty intact—no patchwork fixes here.
We’re mobile and nationwide: we come to you after big hail events, handling assessment, claims, and repairs so you focus on moving forward.
Family drives everything: As a husband, dad of three, and son-in-law in the trade, we operate with small-town integrity, honesty, and care we’d give our own loved ones.
If hail hits your area, don’t wait—reach out early for a free inspection. Act fast, and we’ll restore your vehicle like the storm never happened.
Thanks for the chance to share more of our story. It’s been a journey of mentorship, grit, family teamwork, and real impact—I’m grateful every day. If you’re facing hail damage anywhere in the US, or want to chat PDR, connect with us—we’re ready to help!

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
When I launched Diamond State Hail Solutions (originally as Diamond State Dent Removal LLC), I started with the absolute bare minimum: the last $500 I had to my name. No investors, no loans, no grants or outside funding—just that $500 and a ton of determination.
At the time, I was transitioning from working under my father-in-law’s guidance in paintless dent repair to owning my own operation. That $500 went straight to the essentials: basic PDR tools (a few glue tabs, knockdowns, and a light board to start), some marketing materials like business cards and a simple website, gas to get to jobs, and covering the bare-bones registration fees to make it official. I couldn’t afford a fancy setup or inventory—I literally bought what I needed one piece at a time as jobs came in.
The early days were lean. I took every small dent removal job I could find—door dings at dealerships, shopping cart hits, anything—to generate cash flow immediately. Every dollar earned went right back in: upgrading tools, paying for certifications, building a better kit for hail work as I specialized. My father-in-law’s mentorship was invaluable—he shared knowledge and sometimes tools—but financially, it was 100% self-funded. We hustled together, traveling to storm sites when hail hit, turning quick repairs into steady income.
There were tough moments, especially during the pivot to full hail specialization and then COVID, when everything slowed and uncertainty spiked. No safety net meant tight budgeting, late nights, and prioritizing what mattered: delivering flawless work to build word-of-mouth and repeat clients. But that grind paid off. By reinvesting every profit and staying laser-focused on hail expertise, we grew from that $500 seed into a business generating well over six figures annually—doubling year over year since the big pivot.
Starting with so little taught me everything about resourcefulness and resilience. It forced smart decisions—no wasteful spending, constant learning, and treating every client like gold because their satisfaction funded the next step. It also reinforced why I love this work: real results from hard work, no shortcuts.
Looking back, that $500 wasn’t just startup capital—it was a test of belief in myself, my skills, and the value we provide. Bootstrapping built a foundation that’s rock-solid and fully ours. If you’re thinking about starting something, know that big funding isn’t always the answer; sometimes the best growth comes from starting small, staying hungry, and letting the work compound.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
My core belief when it comes to managing a team and keeping morale high is simple but powerful: treat your people as best as absolutely possible, and they will give you the best results possible. A happy, valued person is going to deliver superior work compared to someone who’s stressed, disgruntled, or feeling undervalued.
In our world at Diamond State Hail Solutions, the work can be intense—long travel days after storms, working in tough conditions on damaged vehicles, tight deadlines during hail season surges, and the pressure of getting every dent perfect. That’s why I make it a point to prioritize people first.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
Lead with genuine respect and care. I treat every team member like family—because many of them feel like extended family after years of hitting storm sites together. My father-in-law and I set the tone: we show up early, work hard side-by-side, and never ask anyone to do something we wouldn’t do ourselves. That builds trust fast.
Listen and communicate openly. Morale drops when people feel unheard. I check in regularly—on the road, after big jobs, or just over a quick call—asking how they’re doing, what they need, and if anything’s frustrating them. Small things like acknowledging a tough day or celebrating a flawless repair go a long way.
Recognize and reward effort. Whether it’s a bonus after a big storm run, covering a meal during travel, extra time off when things slow down, or just public shout-outs for great work, I make sure people know their contributions matter. In a seasonal business like ours, where income can fluctuate, showing appreciation consistently keeps everyone motivated.
Create a positive, supportive environment. We keep things light when we can—jokes on long drives, team meals, sharing wins from the day. I also encourage balance: family time is sacred, especially since I’m a dad of three myself. When people know their personal life is respected, they’re more invested in the work.
Invest in their growth. I share knowledge freely (drawing from my father-in-law’s 35 years and my own 10+), provide training opportunities, and give people chances to take on bigger roles. Seeing team members improve and earn more feels like a win for everyone.
The payoff is clear: happy, motivated people do exceptional work. They pay attention to details, push through fatigue, and represent the brand with pride. In our case, that translates to flawless repairs, rave client reviews, and the kind of loyalty that helps us grow year after year.
Bottom line: high morale isn’t about fancy perks—it’s about consistent, authentic care. Treat people right, and they’ll go the extra mile for you, your clients, and the business. It’s the foundation of everything we’ve built.
