Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jon Reynolds. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Jon, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?

In my line of service work, if I’m not on the bench, I’m not making money. Between customers visits, invoicing, parts orders, and communications, there’s very little time left for actual hands on instruments. I attempt to improve on this by limiting shop hours, and maintaining strict appointment slots. A lot of people don’t realize the late nights and amount of hours it takes to run a one man repair shop. I’ve always thought I’ve done well limiting work time to balance family life. Sometimes it takes the late night work through to afford for family time the following day.

Jon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

My name is Jon Reynolds, and I’m a guitar repairer in the Austin Texas area. I started my company Dr. Jon’s Guitar Repair in September of 2008 with a goal of helping players one guitar at a time.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?

For me the best advice I can give someone is to grind away, and the leads will come. There’s no need to invest in marketing yourself. If you have something to offer, people will want it. If you’re really good, you’ll get more business from word of mouth than you can handle. Then if you choose not to grow, limiting your presence/availability will become your main struggle.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.

So when I started my company, it was a side hustle to learn while I earn until I could make my way into the music scene as a guitar technician. Quickly realizing I was at a better place practicing lutherie rather than stretching strings on the road.
