We recently connected with Jon Madl and have shared our conversation below.
Jon, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back at the decisions you made early in your career, particularly whether to join a firm or start your own, do you feel you made the right choice for that stage of your career?
When you were first starting out, did you join a firm or start your own?
I decided to join a firm when I first got into real estate, specifically Keller Williams and the Wise Advantage Team. It wasn’t a question of going solo or joining; I knew that surrounding myself with experienced agents would be the best way to get up to speed in a highly competitive market. With over 200 agents in our local office and decades of experience on the team, it was like having Google Maps for the real estate world. Why reinvent the wheel when I could partner with folks who knew exactly how to navigate?
Why did you make the choice you did?
Joining a firm gave me a powerful support system, access to training, and resources I couldn’t have had on my own. Working alongside other agents who know the ins and outs of North Texas allowed me to dive in headfirst but with a safety net. Plus, I’m big on collaboration, and I knew that being in an environment of like-minded professionals was going to fast-track my progress. I like to think of it as having a whole network of experts in my back pocket—it’s like a secret weapon that isn’t so secret but is incredibly effective.
Looking back, do you think it was the right choice?
Without a doubt, it was the right choice! The support, structure, and knowledge base here have been instrumental in my growth. I’ve been able to focus on building genuine connections, offering real value to my clients, and developing my skills without getting bogged down by some of the challenges that new agents can face when they go it alone. And I still get to see homes I’d want to live in myself—honestly, that part never gets old!
Tell us the backstory – so we can understand what it was like being in your shoes.
When I started, I was coming off a career that spanned education, project management, and even a stint in mortgage lending. I’ve always been passionate about helping people, so real estate was a natural fit, especially with my background in managing workflows and finance. At the same time, jumping into real estate was a big shift, and I was excited but definitely aware that I had a lot to learn. Imagine bringing together all the tools in your toolkit but realizing you still need a new set! Those early days were spent soaking up knowledge, attending as many training sessions as I could, and meeting people who’d been doing this for years. I knew I was starting a whole new chapter, but I was ready.
What were those first few years like?
The first few months were both thrilling and humbling. Real estate has been a dream of mine for over 20 years, and having bought and sold a couple of my own homes, I knew I wanted to dive in—but North Texas is a competitive market! Getting up to speed took a lot of networking, time blocking, and keeping up with an endless flow of new listings and trends. My mortgage background gave me a strong start, but working as an agent brought a new energy and a steep learning curve. I’ve been a master networker since my days running a small company, so I focused on building connections from day one, knowing they’d be key to my success.
I was also fortunate to start working with my coach, Vicki Christensen, early on. She’s helped me stay organized, refine my routines, and track my progress. I like to joke that I was “learning where all the light switches were” those first few months—figuring out the balance between marketing, building relationships, and learning every corner of the market. Every new relationship, listing, and challenge has reinforced my passion for real estate and made me a better agent, and I wouldn’t trade any part of the journey so far!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For those who haven’t read about me before, here’s a bit about my journey and what I bring to the table as a North Texas real estate agent.
Real estate has been a long-standing dream for me, something I’ve wanted to dive into for over 20 years. My career has taken me through a few different paths, each of which brought me closer to where I am today. I spent over 12 years in education, where I learned the value of clear communication and understanding individual needs, then moved into mortgage lending, giving me a solid grasp of financing. As a project manager, I honed my skills in organization and workflow design. My journey also involved building a small business from $33,000 to over $2 million in annual production, which gave me an early start in networking and taught me what it takes to grow a successful business from the ground up.
Why Real Estate?
I’m drawn to real estate because it’s one of the most significant and personal financial decisions people make. I’m now with Keller Williams and part of the Wise Advantage Team—a powerhouse team with over 30 years of local experience and more than 200 agents. The support and shared expertise in my office have been instrumental in my journey, and I’ve loved stepping into an industry that lets me combine my passion for service, my financial background, and my love for seeing homes that anyone would be proud to own.
What I Offer & Problems I Solve
As a North Texas agent, I help buyers and sellers in some of the best communities around, including Flower Mound, Denton, Argyle, and Highland Village. I offer personalized guidance, from connecting clients with vetted tradespeople and offering move-in checklists to providing home service plans that give buyers peace of mind. For sellers, I use seven strategic selling methods through Keller Williams, including exclusive access to investor networks and private listings, so they can get the best possible outcome—whether it’s a quick sale or maximizing profit.
I’m particularly focused on educating clients and building genuine connections. I know how overwhelming the buying and selling process can be, so I focus on being as transparent as possible and always keeping their best interests in mind. I even work with For Sale By Owner (FSBO) clients by providing tools and regular check-ins because I believe everyone deserves a knowledgeable advocate.
What Sets Me Apart
There are a lot of agents out there, but what sets me apart is my approach. My experience in mortgage lending and project management lets me provide a full-picture perspective to clients, guiding them not just through listings but through the financial considerations and timeline management that make for a seamless transaction. And as a Master Networker, I’m dedicated to creating connections that truly benefit my clients, whether that’s finding a buyer for a unique property or matching a family with their perfect home. My real estate coach, Vicki Christensen, has helped me further refine my approach, especially in time-blocking and organizing my work, so I’m always available and focused on my clients.
What I’m Most Proud Of
The thing I’m most proud of is the way my career has grown into something that’s as much about people as it is about real estate. I love supporting clients, from first-time buyers to established homeowners, and helping them feel confident in their decisions. Watching a client’s face light up when they find “the one” or hearing a seller’s relief when we get the right offer is incredibly rewarding.
Key Takeaways for Potential Clients and Followers
I’m a relationship-first real estate agent with Keller Williams, backed by a dedicated team that’s deeply rooted in the North Texas community. My focus is on serving, educating, and building genuine, lasting connections with my clients. I combine a data-driven approach with a personal touch, ensuring every client gets the guidance, resources, and attention they need to make their real estate journey a positive one. And if you’re looking for a fun fact—I’m a big fan of business books, science fiction, and collecting Funko Pops, which keeps things balanced outside of work!
Whether you’re buying, selling, or simply curious about real estate, I’m here to help make the process enjoyable, understandable, and successful for you.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When I started, I thought success meant showcasing my expertise, but I quickly learned that real value comes from listening deeply to clients. Real estate is personal, and clients often need space to express their goals, even if they’re not fully clear on what they want. By stepping back and truly hearing them, I’ve gained insight into their unique needs, allowing me to create solutions that genuinely fit. Now, I prioritize asking questions and listening closely, which has become one of my most valuable skills in understanding and serving my clients.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
These three books have profoundly shaped my approach to real estate and personal growth. The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy taught me the power of small, consistent actions that compound over time, keeping me grounded and results-oriented. Atomic Habits by James Clear reinforced the importance of creating effective systems and streamlining daily routines, emphasizing that even 1% improvements lead to lasting change. Lastly, Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki opened my eyes to the importance of financial literacy, asset-building, and taking calculated risks, which I now share with clients to empower them in their investment decisions. Together, these insights drive my commitment to long-term success and continuous improvement.
